Windshield is tilted back too far

    I dry-fit my soft doors on Mighty Mouse yesterday, and the windshield frame is tilted back way too far (top of the door is out beyond the front of the windshield), even with the 1/4" steel shim I put in the joint to get the wiper motors off of the cage. Any cheap tricks to compensate for this besides the obvious "buy a new seal" or to use a thicker block of something in the joint? The hinges aren't adjustable, are they? I've never had windshield hinges apart on a 5.

    Dumb question but do you have a 76 and later windshield on your Jeep?

    Nope, it's the original '67 with the top wipers.

    No dumb questions here aside from mine.

    The more I google this, the more I'm finding the bottom hinges are adjustable? I'm gonna hit them with the impact and see if they are slotted.

    Sorry for the ignorant question, I've just never had to take one of these apart before.

    I don't think the hinges are adjustable, but the latches are.

    By golly, they are adjustable!
    There is about a 1/4" of adjustment in the oversized hole.

    To be adjustable, there has to be a captured threaded block that can move, even if the holes are oversized. I was going to suggest you look under the dash first but ... too late!

    Even with the extra adjustment, I still had to stick some 1/4" plates in the joint to make up for my shrunken mess of a cowl seal.

    The driver's side bracket wasn't as easy to remove. One of the Philips screws was completely rounded out.

    As you note, the rubber gasket between the w/s and the dash compresses with age, and increases the angle. A full thickness gasket will help restore the correct w/s angle,

    I submit that the doors are for a different year, or even for either a 2A or 3A or 3B.

    The doors and top are definitely for this era of 5. They are off of my old '70. It'll fit perfectly now that that has been "fixed". I'll order a new cowl seal at some point.

    I had this problem. Over time the hinge bends. Take the hinge out of the windshield frame and straighten the flat plate.

    You know, I wondered if there was more going on. I also noticed a fair amount of wear in the slot where the rod rides against the slotted opening. If a cowl seal doesn't totally address this, I might need some new hinges.

    My cj5 had hinges that were bent a bit from bikini tops being tightened down too much to get rid of the flapping. BTW i cannot believe you only stripped out ONE of those screws.

    I used a manual "hit it with a hammer" impact driver with a large Phillips impact bit in it to remove these screws. Took them right out with no problem. I would never have been able to get them out without it. On the advice of a friend, I bought this thing years ago to remove the Phillips screws that were securing a damaged door in an older vehicle. After having struggled trying to remove them before I did purchase it, I was surprised how quickly and easily they came out with this tool. I would say this is a "must have" for anyone in here.

    FWIW, it was destroyed before I even got there. I didn't even realize it until I scraped out the glob of brushed-on paint.

    That was going to be my "plan B" if the impact gun (at very low speed) didn't look like it was going to work.
    That wouldn't have helped me when I unfortunately stripped out one of the alan-head bolts holding my mirror mount that was hiding one of the windshield screws. I drilled it out then snapped my e-z out in it. Grrr.
