I have a t98 transmission. anybody know what the top speed when going in reverse? last night I had to back up about 30 feet, and it seemed like it wouldn't go above 1 mile per hour. I don't remember it being like that, but I also don't remember the last time I used reverse either.

Did it feel like it was being held back, like brakes dragging?

there is an ebrake on the back of the transmission that isn't hooked up. think maybe it somehow applied pressure, or is breaking?

Best way to tell if something really is dragging is backing up on hard pavement, pushing the clutch in and seeing if it still rolls slowly or just quickly stops. Typically something that is geared really low does give a feeling of dragging even if it's not. Probably not the e-brake but certainly wouldn't hurt to check.

ok. so lets say nothing is dragging, and it rolls when I push the clutch in. why is it so slow in reverse? is this normal?

Per the novak website on T-98's

"It has a deep first gear of 6.39:1 and is direct-drive in fourth gear. It's reverse ratio is 7.82:1."

You ain't goin nowheres fast bass ackwards.

I haven't ever looked to see what the reverse ratio is, so that explains a lot. ;)

Always fun watching people's impatience while it takes you seemingly 5 minutes to back out of a parking space in a T98 Jeep.

Really? The big question I would ask is if something is "different."

I do recall the T-98 in my five-quarter-ton M-715 definitely had a super low creeper first gear.

Even more fun when reversing, ya gas her a bit, then shift into overdrive and increase your speed even yet! :)

I drive dump truck and pup trailer for a paving company. The best of us can back up a trailer at 18mph in a straight line and about 10-15 around most corners. Its a little bit harder at night. When running bob tail backing up the paving machine I get a big kick out of passing the cars in the pilot car lane. Or sometimes because of how traffic has to be routed we can end up in the traffic lane backing up with someone in their car just a few feet off the front bumper and we are all doing 15-18mph.

I am jealous of the guys with 18 speeds in their trucks as they can even split the gear before going into high range while backing up. I just have to just have to bang it into high range which sometimes if we have to start out on a hill is really hard to do as the truk can't coast far enough to make the shift.

Dump truck drivers we make our living backing up!
