Smaller Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Discussion in 'Intermediate CJ-5/6/7/8' started by 74CJ5 Renegade, Feb 19, 2017.

  1. I am installing a larger alternator and it is hitting the oil pressure sending unit. If I can install a slightly smaller oil pressure sending unit (about 1/4 of an inch) the alternator will fit.

Are there any other options out there?

I tried the CVF Racing alternator relocation bracket but I don't like the design.

An option may be to use a couple of brass pipe fittings (say a close nipple and 45 degree ell) to reposition the sending unit.

If it's a 304, I think the later V8s use a 45 degree fitting with the Delco alternator. Which alternator are you using? My '82 has a 10SI from the factory, so I know that will fit. The parts book shows several different PNs for an elbow between the oil filter adapter and the sending unit.

Another possibility is to switch to a mechanical oil pressure gauge, which eliminates the sender and replaces it with a tube leading to the gauge. It would be easy to eliminate the interference between the tube and the alternator.

  5. 304 v8... Powemaster alternator.

I think it's either find a smaller sending unit or get some pipe fittings.

    Thanks for the help fellas!

I have a Powermaster on my 304. Let me know if you'd like a photo of my sending unit. I'm guessing you've got it figured out by now.

  7. Well that was easy! I picked up a 1/8 npt 90 degree fitting at Ace Hardware. I'm good to go!

    Thanks for the help!
