    how does this work?? i remember the part about cutting the existing one out with a hack saw blade turned backards but that just leaves the spring hanger casing thing. do the busings just go back in and ride on that little ring of metal that's left behind? and won't that cut the purdy new bushings up?

    Re: ploy shackle bushing question

    Once you take out the existing old bushing with metal core (hacksaw method), you slide a new metal core into new poly bushing put some silicon grease (dielectric grease) in loop end of spring and/or perch and on bushing and install assembly together. One way to install is to get a 10 inch piece of all-thread two large washers and two nuts, put a nut and washer on one end of the all-thread, put the bushing assembly on, put the all-thread into the spring loop/perch, place washer and nut on other side and draw the nuts together. Works pretty good. All poly bushings I have got had new steel cores in the kit. Hope this answers your question.

    C-Clamps work well for putting the bushings in as well.

    i gues what i was trying to say is you cut the outer metal to get it out. the new poly's come with two sides and a new core spacer. what about the outer spacer that was cut? do the new bushings just ride on the frame side of spring hanger now?

    I guess the short answer is yes. The bushing you took out was probably rubber vulcanized between two pieces of metal. with all that removed your poly bushings should fit directly into the eyes of the spring and the eye on the frame, and it should be very snug fit, needing a c-clamp or the all-thread thing I described to install.

    You can't install the bushings if you don't remove that other sleeve from the old bushing from the eye of the hanger.

    Then you just insert a new one.

    The setup is exactly the same as what you removed.

    Bolt -> Metal O -> Rubber (or Poly) -> Metal O -> hanger eye

    i uesd torch to remove the rubber on mine. also the poly inserts install better when you cut a slight taper on one end.

    Propane torch was a given when removing the old bushings I thought. ;)

    I've never needed to taper 'em. Just be sure to apply steady pressure to the bushing. No hammering. Squeeze it in.

    I used my air inpact hammer with a cutting tool to remove the center bushing and rubber. I purchased a truck 3 in 1 ball joint tool which is basically a large heavy duty "C" clamp. The screw end is the same size as the outer bushings. I used this tool to press the outer bushings out with the help of some good penitrating fluid and my inpact cutter. Some of them were difficult to remove, they had been in there sense 71. I used the lubricante that came with the poly bushings and a large "C" clamp to press the new poly bushings in. The new bushings didn't have an outer metal bushing, they pressed into the spring eye. To replace all the bushings took a good day.

    DOH! You're right. The poly bushings only have the inner sleeve not the outer one. :oops:

    I used some dish soap and a nylon faced hammer to install mine. IIRC, I put the metal inner ring after the bushing was in the spring, again, using dish soap. No sweat...not even a little one.

    Now getting the old metal outta there...that was noisy. Wot a pain!
    Used the air hammer with the pointy tip. Once I got under the metal ring, I was able to bend it in and work it loose.

    This is what I use to replace them. I have the OTC version, but cheaper ones can be had. (Harbor Freight, etc.). Also handy for stubborn u joints. Oh, and ball joints:D
