Was The Tach An Option?

I've got a '75 CJ5 with the 304V8/Renegade package. Was the tach an option?

Reason I ask is, I can't find any indications there was a band of any type on the steering column where I've seen them on other units.

 

Yes there was a tach option I had one and sold it a few years back. Mine came off a heavily optioned 74 Renegade I parted out years ago. They are rare, I got $300 for it.

 

Huh. I would have said not before '76. I don't remember that at all. The column clamps indicate otherwise. I had a tach on my '73 but it was aftermarket.

 

Never seen the column mount factory Tach, only the small in dash tachs.

 

I worked at a Jeep dealer from 72 to fall 75. Never remember seeing a factory tach on a CJ. I was involved with the factory order forms for the new inventory and any special ordered vehicles. Can't say I ever saw it listed any where as an available factory option, not saying it was not available as a dealer installed accessory though. As I recall there was a dealer catalog of sorts that had lots of misc accessories for jeep vehicles listed available from American Motors for dealers only. Many of the parts would have the Jeep logo on them, maybe a tach too.
The wire ends and splice in the photo makes me think It was installed as as a later addition. The connections would not have been part of a factory made wiring harness. Also leading me to think it was a dealer installed option from AMC is the nice jeep style steering column mount that probably would not of been available anywhere else.

 

My ‘75 owners manual shows a tach with the Jeep logo. I’m hoping I come across one someday...

 

Back in the day (1980's) I had a '72 CJ5 with the same tach that RattyFlatty shows in post#2, but mine was a bit more faded. It came on the heavily modified Jeep, but I assumed it was stock with the AMC logo on it.
