Not "bad" in general. Just less certain. Factory equipment has the benefit of professional engineering and testing, as well as extensive in-service testing. With custom work, that depends on the builder. You need a critical eye when evaluating custom work.

Custom can be the best or the worst.
It's pretty rare to find something completely custom that has all of the bugs worked out.

 

Here is a picture of the engine compartment I took when I looked at it last week. I forgot I had this. Does this give any insight??

he says it’s a 304 but when I Google that it looks nothing like this. I’m not an expert on this so what do I know.

You are not allowed to drag-and-drop into a post that has already been posted. You have to go to the "more options" editor, where it's allowed.

Maybe you aren't allowed to post pictures as a noob, though I think you can.

Sure it's not a 340?

 

Looks like a Ford 302/289.

 

Guessing Ford also. Hard to tell.

 

Mystery solved, found out it is a 302.

 

Even with the bad picture, you can tell it's a Ford. The distributor is almost vertical, the top radiator hose comes straight out the front of the intake, it's Ford blue, and it has Ford shaped valve covers. Not to mention the air cleaner looks a lot like and early 70's Ford part (with the snorkle missing):

 

This is why when I have an engine question I just PM Fireball.

 

Ford small block for sure.
