Not "bad" in general. Just less certain. Factory equipment has the benefit of professional engineering and testing, as well as extensive in-service testing. With custom work, that depends on the builder. You need a critical eye when evaluating custom work.

    What Tim said above.
Custom can be the best or the worst.
It's pretty rare to find something completely custom that has all of the bugs worked out.

Here is a picture of the engine compartment I took when I looked at it last week. I forgot I had this. Does this give any insight??

he says it’s a 304 but when I Google that it looks nothing like this. I’m not an expert on this so what do I know.

    No pic here either.

The forum will host your pics if they are reasonable size, say 800x600. Drag and drop from your desktop.

    HeathkitEGA.png

Drag and drop, a 730x972 PNG. NP.

    Works with JPEGs too.

You are not allowed to drag-and-drop into a post that has already been posted. You have to go to the "more options" editor, where it's allowed.

Maybe you aren't allowed to post pictures as a noob, though I think you can.

Does not look like a 304 to me. Maybe a larger picture?

    Sure it's not a 340?

    This should help....
Has a front mounted distributor so that is a plus...amc 304/sbf302/Buick 350?...image is pretty dark, hard to make out details...

Even with the bad picture, you can tell it's a Ford. The distributor is almost vertical, the top radiator hose comes straight out the front of the intake, it's Ford blue, and it has Ford shaped valve covers. Not to mention the air cleaner looks a lot like and early 70's Ford part (with the snorkle missing):
