    Hello all,

I am new here. I tried the search feature but did not find anything terribly helpful.

I am in the process of stripping down my 65 CJ5. I am trying to remove the front drive shaft so that I can remove the Tcase and transmission eventually so that I can go through them both.

I have already removed the rear drive shaft and have all the U-joint straps removed from both ends of the front drive shaft but I cannot get the front drive shaft to pop out.

Is there anything special about these or do I just need a bigger lever? I can get it to budge some, but I am afraid to get too rough with it. It is rather old afterall...

    Any tips would be helpful.

    Thanks

No nothing different- u joints are u joints.

What may be happening is the slip joint in the drive shaft may be frozen, try unscrewing the dust cap & spraying your choice of penetrant/rust dissolver in there. Judicious application of force may be required.

    Welcome :)

Yes, some lubrication in the slip yoke, then a BFPrybar in between the diff yoke and ujoint should do it. Hey, I just noticed you have a '65. Cool, I am just finishing a '65 tux. My build on here is '65 Rubicon Rig. Tim

Thanks all, I got it out this morning, though I am not so sure that the slip yoke did much slipping.

Now to drop out the transfer case.

Welcome from Michigan, The people here are the best. I pull my trans and transfer case with a cherry picker, lay your windshield down, put a 5/16" eye bolt in the top right rear transmission cover hole hook on with a strap and let it down on a rug and drag it out. Good luck.

    Thanks for the tips.

I have it all loose, but cannot seem to get the trans / tcase and cross member down. The tcase shifters are hitting the floor pan.

I have the back of the engine propped up with a jack. Do I need to pull the engine first or can I get it to drop out without damaging the motor mount attachment points.

Remove the floor pan and pull the pin holding the sticks in place. Remove the sticks.
Might pull the transmission cover as well......

Any tricks for pulling that pin? I tried pulling the zerk and threaded a bolt into the hole and hammered on that with no luck.

Mine is stuck and I cannot get it out. I think I'm going to have to pull the engine so I can drop it down forward with the sticks in place.

Some of the pins, like for M series, are threaded. You don't need to pull the entire power pack.

If I remember correctly, there is a 1/4in. lock screw on the ''case ear'' that holds the shift leaver pin in place on some of the dana 18tc, remove it and the shift lever pin will slide out.

Is there a way to tell if mine is threaded? And if so, how do you unscrew it? Is there an Allen head or something on the side next to the transmission?

I'm stuck. I can't drop any of it any further unless I can get that pin out and I don't see that happening. I tracked down a cherry picker, but the cylinder is busted so I have to get that sorted out.

    This.
Should be a square headed "set" screw on the inner ear. It will be on the front of the ear parallel with the ground. If it isn't there, look hard for the hole, as it may have been broken off in years past.

    Alright...

It has been a bit but I finally got the engine pulled and the transfer case / transmission dropped out of the jeep.

I am in the process of separating the two and am in need of some help.

I have removed all of the bolts holding the two together and can wiggle some separation but it feels like something is still holding them together. Is there some sort of retaining clip or pin on a shaft that I need to remove to get them apart?

Mine has a PTO on the driver's side of the transfer case with an output towards the front of the vehicle.

If you are talking about separating the trans and transfer, you need to remove the pto, then the output gear off the trans shaft, then the 2 should separate.
