While replacing the fuel pickup assembly with a new one on my 78 CJ5 style 15 gallon tank (in my 65 cj5). But the new unit had a strainer that slides VERY loosely on the pickup tube. It will not stay on. I know there must be an easy answer to this, but how the heck do I get the strainer to stay on the pickup tube. The strainer and pickup assembly came together and were not purchased separately. I just want to ask for help because it will be submerged in fuel and I don't want to do the wrong thing. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

You mean the filter sock that goes on the end of the tube. The ones I've seen fit tightly on the tube. Who did you buy the parts from?

Attached a pic. Bought it on Amazon. Probably shouldn't have in retrospect. I could use an o ring to hold it in place for installation but it would certainly be degraded over time I'm sure

Amazon's return policy is quite liberal. It's probably Amazon Marketplace and there's an actual company behind the sale - Amazon is just a front for them. The sock should not fall off.

What kind of tank do you have? If it's a plastic tank, it's probably from MTS. You could call them and ask about a sender and this issue. http://www.mtscompany.com/jeep.htm

Ayuh,..... I just did this job on my '63 CJ 5, with a '70 something steel tank, 'n I pulled the sock right off, 'n slipped on a long enough piece of rubber fuel line to lay on the bottom of the tank,.....

If I get sh!t in the tank,... I want it to get sucked into the spin-on filter I put in, just before the fuel pump,.....
I Don't wanta have to drop that tank again,...... especially for a clogged sock,....

NB that the plain fuel hose you get from the parts store is not rated for immersion in fuel. There is hose available that is rated for immersion - https://www.bing.com/search?form=MOZLBR&pc=MOZI&q=fuel+hose+rated+for+immersion+in+fuel
