I have a '73 cj5 and would like to know the lube points of most importance on it. Any input would be appreciated.

Axle shaft u joint, front and rear drive shaft, steering shaft are the one that are easy to do.

As for wheel bearing, they need to be disasemble to get lube, but it a good thing to do a couple time of the year (depending on the use of the jeep). Also it will help ajusting the preload on wheel bearing making them more durable.

Also oil in axle, engine, transmission and t-case once a year isn't bad.

Unsure how to answer. Which lube points can be neglected? The ones for inexpensive parts that wont cause an accident I suppose.

they all have some importance. however, the x-fer case shifter might need the least attention, because it typically is used far less often than the other "points".

driveshaft and axle u-joints are pretty critical, then the ball studs and driveshaft slipjoints, tie rods, steering u-joint all play critical roles in the safe function of the jeep.

Clutch bell crank has a grease fitting too.

I would think the highest priority is the driveshaft u-joints. Jeeps seem to have a lot of u-joint failures, and an accelerated lubrication schedule seems warranted. Lube the slip joints too. Our CJs don't have them unless upgraded, but the double Cardans on full-sized Jeeps are often neglected. The front one lets go and bangs a hole in the transmission case ...

right, i forgot about those, because i converted mine to a hydraulic clutch. so, if the OP still has the bellcrank clutch assembly, for sure grease that once a year.

Reopening thread as I can’t get the link above to open. Same question - same year - ‘73 cj5.
Anyone have a fresh link or place I can see?

Why not just lube everything according to the FSM service schedule? The guys that built our jeeps knew a thing or two.

Link works for me, but it's not appropriate for a '73. https://www.kaiserwillys.com/tech-guide/lubrication-specs-cj-5

There is a '74 TSM - free to read and download - on the Tom COllins site that has a Maintenance chapter. https://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/B-Maintenance.pdf

Many differences in the other models, but a '73 CJ-5 is almost identical to a '74 CJ-5. Suggest you get the TSM for '73 anyway - there is an article in the technical documents on this site that describes the TSM and other references you might want.

I know this is an old thread, but,
    Don't forget the spindle bearings.
They are THE most neglected lube point on every open knuckle vehicle in existence.

Yeah, I usually get those at front wheel brg service intervals .Although they probably need it more often because it is hard to keep contaminates out of them no better seal setup than they have.
