I’m doing a rebuild on my Dana 18 and I’ve hit a roadblock. I’m trying to get the special nut that holds down the planetary gears in my Warn overdrive. Everywhere I look it says it’s a half inch drive extension to get that nut out however a half inch doesn’t fit. It’s too big and 3/8 is too small. Is there a special socket I need?

Slide the lock plate out with long pliers then the special nut is beneath it.

I think the “special nut “I’m talking about is called a star nut? And I’m looking right at it. Like I said, 3/8 drive is too small and a half inch drive is too big. Am I missing something here?

I see herm the overdrive guys part list. 1806 is the part number for the “lock washer” And that’s what I’m trying to get off. Has anybody else experienced this? 3/8 drive is too small and a half inches too big! What the heck do I use to get this lock washer off?

I’ve use snap-ring pliers to squeeze outward inside the washer. It might need to twist a little to fit between the gears as it releases from the nut initially.

All right, I think I get it now. That washer that shaped like a star needs to come out. However, it is being a Bee-ouch! I can’t get the damn thing to budge. And before anybody else, yes I did remove this lock ring.[IMG]

Eureka! Snap ring pliers did the trick. Thanks.[IMG]

I am late to the party here but currently trying to remove the OVERDRIVE unit and cannot get it out. I followed Herms instructions prying on it but it won’t come any further. Any suggestions?

Not sure of your setup but on my CJ 5 with a Warn overdrive I have to pry from the bottom and the top.
Remove the small cover above to gain access. It takes awhile.

The Warn units have a bearing held onto the main shaft which is a press fit into the cup on the planetary hub. With all five bolts removed from the housing there is nothing other than that bearing to hold it but they can be pretty tightly stuck.

It sometimes helps to turn the unit counter clockwise a little while prying on opposite sides. The later Saturn units have that bearing retained inside the cup of the planetary hub with a C clip. This arrangement makes assembly and disassembly easier.

Thanks for the responses. I will try rotating and prying.
