Having trouble installing my drivers side front dump exhaust manifold, wants to contact the notch at the top of the steering boxi.e. it appears the engin is sitting too low by a half inch or so maybe. New engine and trans mounts installed...I didn't take it apart so I don't have any pics to fall back on and its fighting me right now. Understand the manifolds are identical right to left and that the one with the heat riser goes on the pax side I believe, but beyond that not sure where my clearance issue is coming from?

You say the front dump is hitting the steering box...if so then you have Saginaw steering swap? Things get tight up front with Saginaw box and front dump manifold. Do I understand correctly that you haven't seen it all together before? If so, it wouldn't be surprising if someone did the steering conversion and used headers instead of the OEM manifolds.

To clarify, it's been my Jeep, but someone else took it apart...long story that falls along the lines of NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED. Anyhow, the aft end of the drivers side front dump manifold is hitting the steering box. I'll get a picture posted today. Searching the site I found where a small change in the tranny mounts can cause a shift up front...makes sense I guess. The original setup had three and a half shims on the tranny crossmember. Not sure if that's the normal amount or if that varied by variances in the frame Jeep to Jeep.

Parts manual only shows one spacer at the cross member, I might look at taking a couple of those out to see if it raises things up enough. Three and a half shims seems excessive to me but precision per se isn't exactly a Jeep hallmark.

okay, so it still has the ross box and that is the rear of the manifold (#5) hitting it. FWIW - on cj5 with the v6/T14, the cross-member had two shims on each side. IIRC, each shim was about 1/4" thick. I would assume the cj6 is the same? Not sure what 3.5 shims means?

By 3.5 shims I mean 3 ea 1/4" shims and 1 ea 1/8" shim if you will. I took out one of the 1/4" and the 1/8" shims leaving 2 shims 1/4" ea in and now I have about 3/8 clearance at the steering box. Not much but it's not touching.

If only they could talk...but then again that would ruin everything.

there was a post not to long ago about how many shims were used for the cross member. A few of us took pics.
This is on my '66 with the Dauntless 225 and T-86 3-speed floor shift.

And to add info, my fairly original T-14 Jeeps both have two spacers per side.

Yeah, mine had almost twice that offset. Since you have your tape measure out, how much space do you have between the drivers side exhaust manifold and the steering box, assuming a 225 V6. Thanks in advance.

I’m afraid I’m in the midst of replacing my clutch so I can’t get any accurate pics of that at the moment.
