I just recently purchased a 1965 Navy CJ5. The Jeep is missing a few parts including the original air filter. I have looked at different websites and vendors to see if I can find a used or remanufactured one without much luck. I'm wondering if anyone has a good picture of what it looks like exactly, I haven't been able to see any really clear photos of it.

Looking at kaiserwillys.com the one they sell for the MB, GPW, CJ-2A, 3A, M38's looks taller than what my CJ5 would have, but like I said I haven't been able to see any good pictures of what it looks like. Please forgive me if this has already been discussed in another thread... I did a search but it came up empty. As I start the restoration/rebuild of this jeep I'm sure I will hav a lot more questions.

I would add, use an original corrugated hose if you can. The repros can be total junk.

My sixty year old hose is fine, the new repop one I bought lasted a week.

Was it perhaps a M606A2? Interesting question- would the CJ-5 have had a civvy or military air cleaner?

Partly depending on the carb used (YF or YS), and the need for underwater snorkeling features.

The blank is missing covering the snorkel opening but from the information I got from the previous owner I don’t think it had a snorkel. My understanding is that it was a naval air station Jeep so I don’t think it would have need for the snorkel. From the information I have been able to find on the internet (which is pretty sparse) there weren’t very many navy CJ5’s. Most navy Jeep’s would have been m38’s, but I am by no means an expert on them. What little information I have on it, is from the previous owner and a few nuggets I have found online. The carb is the carter carb, I’m not sure what the YF or YS is. Any information I could find on this Jeep would be helpful.

Your ‘65 CJ5 is a civilian Jeep that was purchased under a military contract. It is not an “M” series Jeep. You are looking for a Donaldson oil bath filter assembly from a regular CJ5. This should not be a hard item to find on this forum if you place a “WTB” (want to buy) in the CJ5 classified section.

Civilian CJ5 has YS Carter carb, with a throat that opens at the top. The air horn elbow that connects to the air cleaner tubing is a separate piece, somewhat loosely clamped to the carb.

The M38A1 has a YS Carter, with an integral 90º elbow. (Also an accelerator pump 'cap' that is side mounted visible on the exterior.) It was entire waterproof, and the air cleaner had a side intake that could also be watertight when connected to a snorkel.
