the photo below is generic, but gives a visual. talking about the lower silver section just above where the shaft goes into the oil pump slot....

Any oil in that area is by splash when the engine is running. There will be no passages blocked by a drive tool. The sleeves only keep the driver aligned with the slot on the pump drive.

I think I'm OK. The Chevy and the Buick engines are different animals in this area, there are no oil passages where the distributor drops into the timing cover. It looks like the top bushing just keeps everything aligned.

On the Buick the distributor gear is lubricated by the oil slinger on the crankshaft, not through the oil galleys.

I will agree to disagree. He has the pictures above. I recently did this as my rope seal ended up in my pump screen. Removed front cover as the new viton
seal went in from the inside. The newer covers have the seal outside. The slinger oils the gear, shaft and timing set. The new cover also has the extra hole next to the distributor.

Looks like a new cover and pump. I believe it takes a bolt on timing tab. It is good to check the end play on the pump shaft.
You did the right thing. 1971 stock was 230hp with a 2 barrel and 260hp with a 4 barrel. Gonna be sweet!

Looks like a high volume pump?
I love mine on my Dauntless.

Yes, new cover, standard pump gears, oil filter housing and timing set. I threw in the steel end plate for good measure, figured it couldn’t hurt anything.

I couldn’t get a decent mount setup for my dial indicator that would work on an aluminum housing. I ended up using the feeler gauge method to set the end play. Even with the thinnest gasket in the set I couldn’t get below about.005 end play so I’m going to have to install it and see what kind of pressure I get before it fires.

This engine looks like it’s never been apart, meaning I’m going to break bolts taking the water pump apart. I’ve seen this movie before…
