Steering Bracket Failure

I have a 72 CJ5 with power steering that was added by the previous owner.

They reused the factory cast steel bracket that used three rather than the four bolt holes.

This mount failed over the weekend tearing the mounting holes from the bracket. We were able do a field repair thanks to a buddies onboard welder.

My question, it appears that used brackets are very scarce and Mountain Off-road has discontinued their mount, they now seem to only sell the mount for 76-85. Does anyone know if the 76 mount can be made to work? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Regards

I'm not sure if the 1976+ would fit. When I built my 1965 CJ I fabricated my own mount. If you looking for something new to buy, Rust Buster makes a very nice heavy duty bracket.

They are scarce, but I have one in good shape that came out of a 73 which I will not be using.

I bought this along with the Saginaw box from the same Jeep, but it was manual steering, not power, and I am not sure it the brackets are the same. It looks to be the same as the one "The Jeepsterman" lists ($300 seems high to me).

I paid $50 for it, will sell for same plus shipping.

hi Oldpappy the three bolt one will work fine, that’s the one that was in there.

$50.00 is more than fair, do you take Venmo?

    Thanks again.

I’m sorry. Worked all day. Just pulled the part to compare to picture you sent.

Here is the picture of what I have. It doesn't look like what Joe has, so thought I would post it in case someone else needs this.

I had a similar failure. The original mount is cast steel of good quality with little porosity which leads it self to welding. l I had a friend who is a very skilled tig welder weld the ears back on. If done well you should have no issues.

I have my power steering box mounted with the original manual steering bracket in my 74CJ5. I had planned to upgrade to a four hole bracket when I found one. 25 years later and the three hole bracket is still in there. I am wondering if there is a steering box brace that would augment my three hole bracket to the point that I wouldn't really need a four hole bracket? Thanks!
