I don't think I've ever driven a Jeep that didn't have a little bit of a gear "growl" when coasting.
I worked at an AMC dealership in the 80s and even the brand new CJs had it back then, when Chrysler took over the wranglers still had it, until they ran out of AMC parts at least.
If it's just a faint growl I consider it normal, if it's obnoxious then there's likely a problem.
    Just my opinion.

The overdrive has a distinctive whine all it's own.

I'm not sure the gearing has too big an effect. It's more about engine loading. The 381 I ran in my 3B for decades was usually just a low grumbling-until you put your foot into it a bit. It has Borla's on it. I might try my shooting muffs when it's back on the road:D

I can't wait to get mine back on the road, head up to the hills, and then come down the mountain using the engine for a brake... one of my fav sounds of rumble.

Of course, I'm also fond of secondaries ... so, yeah. $5/gallon. Sigh. May have to start distilling hootch to make my own fuel.

I just picked up some Axil 'electric' noise cancelling / amplifying hearing aid style ear pro, both sides connected by a wire or something, over the ear and squeezie insert ...

I like it so far. Have not hooked up my phone to the bluetooth capability. Used them at an indoor shooting range, 4 active shooters, and could still hear my BIL next to me talking.

I didn't pay msrp... so worth it, about as expensive as other regular amplified ear pro muffs from Leight, etc.
