As a heads up. If the alternator is tight in the lower mounting bracket...grind the alternator to fit. If it is real loose, use a washer or shim
to take up the slack. Do not tighten the lower bolt to take up the slack or you risk breaking the ear off the mount.

Also as a note, some of the 10/12si alternators are clocked differently on the back so the wires may be in hard spot to hook up. You can rotate the back if needed. You will probably need to deal with the brushes if you do.

If you need to re clock the alternator, there are access holes to insert a piece of stiff wire into that will hold the brushes in place while clocking. There is a post by timgr somewhere if I can find it.

    Quick question/confirmation…

first of all thanks to everyone for all the input and suggestions.

I read this article suggested by vtxtasy and decided to go with a 10si 3-wire delco-remy 63amp alternator

    http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml

    it dropped in perfectly.

I also bought the adapter connection for the two terminals.

when wiring it up, I removed my external regulator and wires.

I know the heavy gauge red wire coming off the starter goes to the output terminal on the alt.

I’m pretty sure the left terminal of the plug (marked “R”) goes to the grey wire coming from under the dash.

I’m not sure what to do with the other terminal on the Alt (marked F) or what to do with the heavy gauge red wire coming from under the dash.

From what I’ve read, that second terminal is for the sensing circuit which leads me to believe I should connect that heavy gauge red wire from under the dash to it. I will trace that red wire to confirm where it goes under the dash.

but I’ve seen videos where they just jumper that second terminal to the battery connector on the alt.

    hope this makes sense.

    any guidance would be appreciated.

Check this thread for more clarification.

Hmmm...it looks like one diagram was removed. Maybe copyrighted.
    Added video.

Think I got it figured out.

Went through the post you pointed me to and went through the diagram and the video.

pulled out the service manual and painfully traced out the wiring (on paper). Planning on tracing out the wires on the jeep tomorrow to confirm what I think I saw in the manual.

Hoping to get an actual understanding of how this circuit is working

the sensing part is still a bit confusing for my simple mind :)

The sensing can be from the large output post on the alternator making basically a 1-wire with a light.
Putting the sensing wire farther in to the circuit helps the alternator sense better. The main power for
your jeep came from the battery or hot terminal on the starter. That would be the junction point shown
in the diagram. From the starter a 10ga wire goes to the headlight switch which is also a junction. The
starter junction has same electrical potential though may not sense the same voltage when the sense wire
    is located at the alternator.

Thank you for helping me understand how this works.

I got everything connected and it seems to be working well.

I’m getting almost 14.5 volts at the battery when it’s running. And the cj5dale light on the speedo is working.

    thanks again for everyone’s input/suggestions.
