Seems like it's worth pulling the valve to see what the issue is. It might just be a little corrosion that will be a quick clean up with some valve lapping... and maybe not, but you don't know until you investigate.

While it's been sitting, possibly that one valve stem developed some rust, in the open position. I have experienced that scenario.

I'm not an engine rebuilder, but I'd try spinning the engine and maybe fogging some penetrating oil down the intake, see if it settles back in. Maybe keep tapping it too at the same time. Just a wild shot before you tear it down.

Aye, pulling the rockers, and hosing down the valves/valve springs with your penetrating oil of choice, and tapping on the tops of the valves with something like rawhide mallet, *usually* will free them up, you just don't want to go all Superman when you're hitting them. Worst case scenario, you end up finding one that's *really* stuck, and need to have the heads rebuilt.

That's a good idea~ I've been looking at valve spring compressors, the least expensive is 50-60 bucks, a vintage type, not from overseas.

 Well, I do know that particular valve isn't stuck, it's just not seating. I've bopped it several times and sounds different than the other valves. I can turn the engine over via the crankshaft bolt. I really don't mind pulling the head, I'm basically already there, which would lead to, pulling the other head, then, remove the oil pan to check the main/connecting rod bearings, then :watch:, taking the darned thing to the machine shop~ I should be receiving the oil drive "tool", then I can get oil to where it needs to be using the starter motor. For some reason I'm finding this kind of "fun";)

I mean, yeah, that's really the *right* thing to do, at the very least, taking everything apart, and checking your measurements, to see if it needs to go to the machine shop, and putting it back together with fresh bearings/rings/gaskets, if it's within spec =P

I had drained the oil to see what it looked like, then poured it back in, it was black, but when I put the oil pump in action via the drill, where did this come from?Do you think water, or emulsified oil/water was hiding in the oil passages? I"m glad I didn't go through the process of trying to start it! Must have been in a flood? Just didn't reflect it. What was peculiar despite the nastiness, I had to turn the engine over via crankshaft, then the oil stuff came up through the rockers. Eventually it stopped. there went a new oil filter.

I'm thinking to use the other engine, have it overhauled and use this one as my mock up engine. The other one may be nasty~ it's a toss up

    The Forbidden Milkshake!

I mean, when an engine sits around for an extended period, especially in humid climates, this can happen, they're not hermetically sealed.

Condensation is the culprit . Oil galley filled up with water from it.

I actually did something to the Dart~ :D I was going to try to re-use the factory hardware, but it was just too rusty, nasty, so, the new hard is good. I actually ordered the riveted type, but received bonded:( A lot going on now due to family stuff~

Hi, yeah, still here;) been fighting a chest congestion(bronchial) for the last month, now mainly a morning ritual of coughing for a non-productive cough :banghead: life goes on~ #69 in a few days.

I gave up on the idea of a manual transmission and decided to use the A-904 (3 speed auto)which I have. I found this console out of a '65 Barracuda and it's in really nice shape. I believe Hurst? makes a shifter which will adapt to it, cable operated.

It has rained so much, it's just plain nasty outside, but at least the sun came out to offer hope;)

Just have to find out where it goes~ and what bracketry I'll need. meh, something to do;) I think this will look nice;) it has a little decay and I haven't spent any time prettying it up.

A fellow Bronco owner came by to visit, as he passed my 318, I explained the problems with it, he suggested why not just get in running and see what it does? I don't have much going on anyway~ and the blasters won't be able to get to the body until beginning of March as they are way behind. So I started the pre-assembly. I'm waiting on intake, waterpump, fuel pump gaskets. When I get it running, does it hurt to run it with open exhaust manifolds? I'll install the manifolds, just don't have any way to put extenders on the cast manifolds.
    time for lunch;)

open manifolds are fine, so long as you arent inhaling exhaust fumes.

If you were planning on running it full throttle, or for extended periods on the stand, yeah, you might have issues with the open manifolds, but for "Does this thing run" and breaking in the camshaft? Nope, you'll be just fine.
