Oddfire Carb Help And Suggestions.

Have a no start issue with my CJ5 with 225 oddfire. It went from running great to stalling at a light and being a little difficult to start. Then it died cruising along in 4th gear and again was hard to start. I made it five miles grabbed some groceries and then it was more difficult to get started. Drove back home
and it now will not start at all.

I have spark at the coil. Spark at the plugs. I pulled the fuel line from the carb and key on the fuel pump pumps fuel.

The carb was on the jeep when I got it. Was told it was an eBay special single barrel. None of the choke stuff is hooked up.

I took the top off the carb and the floats seem to be floating. Past setting an air mixture screw and an idle screw I don’t know much about carbs.

I tried putting a little gas down the carb but still no start. I will get some starter fluid tomorrow just to see if it will turn over at all.

Any suggestions on what could be wrong and options for a replacement 1bl would also be great.

Attached is the link to the carb.

    Are
are you sure that it’s carb related and you timing didn’t jump?

A failing condenser will cause your issue.

Always check for spark FIRST with a no-start condition.

Suddenly dying is usually an ignition problem.

Carb issues usually involve backfiring, bucking, and other things related to running out of fuel.

    Is your ignition stock?
Do you have spark when it dies?

    Shouldn't the 225 come with a 2 barrel rochester 2g carb?

    Some 225 manifolds have a one-barrel interface.
The two-barrel is more desirable, but let's get this guy running first.

    Thanks guys.

In my above post I did check spark at coil and then at spark plug and both gave solid spark. I checked fuel flow on the carb side of the external fuel filter and have good flow.

    ignition is stock.

Because I have spark and fuel that was what made me think the carb. I will check and see if possibly the distributor rotated out of time.

Make small adjustments to the distributor advance. The odd-fire can be a trick to get running if you remove the distributor entirely.

What made me question the carb also was that when I pulled the fuel line off the carb no fuel leaked out.

And thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Well, I think you may be the winner. I just walked out to the garage and was able to rotate the distributor by hand. I will report back this evening. Thanks!

That would definitely cause a problem with starting and running if the timing is way off.

    This escalated quickly.

I had some marks on the distributor and engine from before. When checked this afternoon it was off but only a few degrees. I moved it and it still refused to start.

when I went to tighten the bolt it went just barely snug to what you see below. The edges are well oxidized so it had been ready to snap off for some time.

now I have a window, motor still won’t start and I have a sinking feeling in my stomach.
My wife just laughed and said that looks expensive.

    Ouch!
Might as well get anew timing set since you’re gonna be in there.

The distributor was NOT locked down? A longer bolt should fix that issue.

It appears you may have found the problem.

The 1 barrel wasn't used on the "Dauntless" 225 in Jeeps, but was used on early 60s Buick cars with that engine.

I don't think your carburetor is the problem, but if you want an original 1 barrel carb which came off a 225 I'll send one to you for the price of postage.
