Ok, need some thoughts on my 318. When I've been running it, I've had my headphones on, but today I was listening a little more intensely with the engine mainly at idle and a little faster without headset. There's an audible knock sound, mainly on the drivers side, using long skinny screwdriver as a stethoscope, I can feel it and hear it in about the middle of the oil pan on the drivers side, not terribly loud~ Gary says he doesn't hear it, but I do. However goes away at say 2000rpm and up, but at that speed the exhaust sound is pretty loud without mufflers. Darn, I should have replaced the connecting rod bearings:( I only pulled one and it looked fine on #3 rod. I let the engine run for about 30 minutes, and oil pressure came down to about 25-30, when cold is 60ish. I'm this close to call the deal off on the slant 6 as I want him to have a good engine:( I'll pull it out of the garage tomorrow and run it outside~ in the garage one can imagine it's pretty loud, try to get a video of it. :( I may just be over listening.

You could just be sensitized, overthinking but also trying to do the right thing...what to do.

Is the "knock" steady, or does it come and go? A rod knock tends to vary depending on the engine being under load or not. A main bearing tends to be more of a steady rumble. Either way, I wonder if you may be hearing 'normal' noises.

In any case, bottom line, it is up to the buyer to judge for themselves. Respect their ability and right to do so as grown-up individuals. They might be entirely willing to take it on.

Right now I've been trying for months to negotiate the purchase of a 1967 Ford Highboy. I want to buy it "as is" but all winter the guy keeps telling me all the things he is having done to 'fix it up.' I'd much rather he didn't.

Hey Pete, it's steady, knock knock knock, etc. A light sound, it might even be normal, but here there's no load other than a heavy flywheel, or a quick throttle doesn't make it louder, I can feel it on the oil pan through my long skinny screwdriver on the drivers side, but not the other side. All else is relatively quiet~fuel pump, valve train, etc. Speeds up with acceleration, but again, faster rpm exhaust gets loud.
Here's what I'm going to try tomorrow~ first I'll get a sound track of it, and post it, then I'll try pulling a spark plug wire one at a time and see if that changes the sound. If I find a cylinder which changes the sound~ I'll address that cylinder by, here we go, pulling the pan again, go from there. I'm on a mission :madwife:! I'm not going to say anything to the potential slant 6 guy at this point.

Is it possibly a lifter? You don't think it's the fuel pump?

When I was a boy, a couple of cans of STP would have been the 'go to' solution. :sneak:

    Whatever happened to STP?

I don't think it's physically possible to hear a mild knock/tic with an open exhaust- the human ear just isn't built to work with that kind of sound pressure differential. I've managed to pull off hearing valve train noise next to a running diesel but that was using a good pair of ear defenders so that the little eardrum muscles weren't stretching them so tight the earwigs could use them to play hand ball.

Thanks Howard, John;) I'm going with it, don't know why I heard what I heard, and why now it's just a faint "noise". On the drivers side, I used my large vacuum hose connected to that size exhaust, just long enough not to melt the hose, but long enough to give a listen~ Right now it's fine. I sent Johnny, the potential 6 guy and he loves it. I also told him regarding the monetary thing, call it even, swap for swap which I think is fair.

Back from the blasters~! I can only imagine how much work they actually do when blasting. People say they wouldn't pay the price, but I find it's well worth the 1200 bucks to catapult me into progress!

Took me a good hour to get most of the sand out of it.

Keeping it here in the AC to minimize flash rusting until we get back from vacation:(

Not shown, but the inner fender panels were super thick with hard undercoating, they got it all off.

This area too was 3/4" thick with hard undercoating. Going to look great!!

I didn’t show the bad, it has its fair share of pin hole panels, but nothing I can’t handle;)

The fella I exchanged the 318/904 for the slant 6 below, came yesterday, a 6 hour drive on his part, his grand father, himself and his son~ I thought was pretty cool and super nice to boot;) Today I made a little cart to move this around. Going on "vacation", so I'll be a while before I get to anything:(
