1970 Jeep Rebuild

By day 3 I am always asking myself how I fit all this crap in here 2 days ago.......

 

I finished the seat belt harness and got that all done.






I got all the parts for the frame tie in, I’ll get that done this week.

 

Nice seats, Rob. You will be a less beat up after 4 days on the trail.

I had been driving JEEP quite a bit and the power steering pump started making grinding noise. Looking closer I could move pulley 1/4” from side to side and the fluid smelled burnt. Took it off and I actually had side to side movement from the shaft. Pulled the pump from the housing and found metal shavings stuck to the magnet inside.

this is after I wiped some of the metal shavings off.


pulled intake off to fix oil leak. Ordered fuel injection system, it’s 6-8 weeks out. I’ll be putting carburetor back on until it shows up.


pulled radiator to see if I can make the fan shroud fit better. This is how it fits now, I’ll be chopping it up and re fiberglassing it enclosing the bottom so I can get better air flow through the radiator.

 

Took everything off the intake manifold and took it to friends house who has blasting cabinet. Brought it home and chased all the threads and put it back together with new thermostat. Sitting on bench ready to go back on engine.

 

Ordered new GM power steering pump, waiting for it to come in.

 

Does that upper radiator hose have a ground for the sensor?

 

Yes it’s on the bottom side in that picture and is grounded back to the block. I’m using that for the electric fan I have hooked up .

 

Been moving slow this week, shoulder really bothering me.
Got intake back on motor and everything hooked up except carburetor.


Dropped distributor back in and hooked up.


Got the new power steering pump installed…. What a pain in the but…. Nothing lined up, ended up spacing the pump back to get the pulleys to line up. Also had to change out fittings to match up what I had on my lines.




Today I pulled the carburetor apart to rebuild. It was rebuilt about 3 years ago, couldn’t believe that the gaskets and rubber parts were hard and disintegrating with the crappy gas we have.




Had to order parts from 3 places to get this back together, now I wait.
Speaking of waiting I’m still waiting on the 7 blade fan, it shows it was shipped on the 17th, now it MIA… contacted the seller to find out wtf?…waiting to hear back.
I still need to work on my radiator shroud.

 

Today I got the carburetor rebuilt and installed on the engine.


Went through all the steps to bleed the power steering pump. Had to get out all the old burnt fluid first then refill and work out all the air bubbles.
I primed the carburetor and set the timing and she fired off first time. Set the float level and adjusted the air/fuel mixture, purring! Can’t run it to long as I don’t have radiator installed or the fan.

 

Today I installed the radiator with the modified shroud. I also put in a Robertshaw 160* thermostat when I installed the intake manifold. Added fluids including water wetter. Set timing at 12* and tuned carburetor. It ran down the road between 175*-180* at speed. Once I dropped it into granny low and let it idle it climbed all the way to 210*., it was around 84* out today.

 

Did it appear like it was going to keep climbing past 210?

 

I don’t know the answer to that Bob. I probably should run it and see if it does get any hotter and go from there. 210* isn’t that bad from what I have read as long as I don’t hit 220*. If you remember when we ran Deer Valley it was hitting 215*.

 

You may want to consider taking a 1 gal pump up weed sprayer with you on the Rubicon trip.
It doesn't take much water on a radiator to really cool it off.

 

Well I have bigger problems….was adjusting timing and I over adjusted and the motor back fired through the carb. I heard/felt grinding in the distributor. As I was shutting off the engine I noticed I had no oil pressure, prior I had in the high 30’s at idle. I pulled the distributor and found the key-way was rounded off and the key-way to the oil pump shaft was also rounded off. Pulled quite a bit of metal shavings just from the hole for the distributor. I haven't pulled the oil filter or drain the oil to see how far the metal shavings traveled through the motor.

 

I have a bad feeling this is gonna cause me to pull the motor and at a minimum to clean out oil passages and replacing the oil pump shaft. I’m going to reach out to DUI distributors and see if I can send back distributor to have the shaft refurbished.

 

Not good. Not sure why the shaft would rise up and disengage enough to strip it, if the hold down was in place. I think you can drop the pan, order up a distributer and oil pump, and do it all in the jeep.

 

I’m hoping to be able to get this done in the JEEP, with my bad shoulder I’m kinda 1 handed and can’t do anything overhead. I just need to get this done before Rubicon trip.

I need to figure out the correct oil pump gears. Gonna call Terry in the next couple days, to make sure I get the right parts.

Im using an after market hold down for the distributor, and when it is loosened it does allow the distributor to ride up a little.
