transmission question

    Another option is to check with Herm. Maybe buy a rebuilt T14 from him or have him rebuild yours, if you aren't comfortable tearing into it.

    As for shipping a T14, it's not that big or heavy. Take the shifter off and use a $15 plastic cooler if you need to ship it...

    I really like that T176 idea. :) Especially with the ability to use the D300 :D
    You'll be able to retain the existing clutch, both the T14 and the T176 have a 1 1/8" 10-spline input shaft. The input shaft tip is the same size as well, .590", so no need to change the pilot bushing.
    The T176 is medium duty but will serve pretty well in moderate offroading.
    It has one nasty habit: It locks up between gears when the shift forks are worn. It usually happens when trying to put it in reverse. It will lock, actually tries to go into two gears at once. The only way to fix it is to pull off the cover and move the sliding gear with a screwdriver, then put the top back on and drive away.
    It used to happen to my buddy so often that when we were offroad hev would remove the tranny hump cover before we went out. When the T176 would lock up, he could remove the 10 bolts, fix it and be driving in 5 minutes ;)
    If you find a T176 I'd recommend pulling the cover, checking the teeth, etc for wear, and replacing the forks with new ones to avoid having to ndo it 6 months later...

    I had thought it was the top covers that wore out on the T-176s, not the shift forks. I understood that replacement covers are available (from 4WDH or JC Whitney!?).

    I also read that used T-176s are becoming scarce. Hot rod builders like them, since they can take the top off and use it on a Ford toploader 4-speed to make a high performance top-shifting transmission (maybe read that here?).

    BTW if the bell you have fits the SBC (ie a 151 bell), you'll need to trade for an AMC-pattern bell to use a T-176. A bell from a T-150 or T-176 (or SR-4, T-4 or T-5, with redrilling) used with a 258 or 304 will work.

    i have another question for you guys. what transmissions will bolt up or adapt to the dana 300. i think it would be a better idea to not mess around with that t5 trans. thanks for the help

    Should fit anything with the New Process pattern (circle) and a 23 spline output shaft. The Jeep transmissions include the SR-4 (weak), T-4 (weak), T-5, AX-15 (too long?), T-18A (from a post 1980 J-20; scarce), and the T-176. There may be some from other manufacturers that will fit, but I'm not familiar with them. IMO the T-176 is your best option with the D300 if you don't want to spend a lot.

    i think im gonna go with the T176. i found one in pa for $300. shipping would be a pain but ill do what i have to to get the jeep goin again. there really isnt much out here for used parts. ive gone around to junkyards but you cant get a trans for under $600.

    so i just found a t176 on ebay thats located down in texas. however i was just poking around ebay and found a guy that had a 304 up for sale about 20 min. south of me. so i tihnk im gonna wait until i find out what kind of trans is near me. but i want the t176. so im gonna think this one over.

    I like the T-150 just fine! They make me plenty of money when second gear goes bad and wipes out the cluster, or the main drive gear grenades! :D Actually, not a bad tranny behind moderate to low horsepower, just wouldn't put one behind a V-8. It's essentially the same toploader 3 speed used in 6 cylinder car applications, commonly referred to as a RAN 3 speed. Nickmil.

    That is definitely a T-5 not a T-4. The bulge on the back portion, bottom of the transmission is the bulge put in for 5th gear. T-4's and SR-4's don't have that, but otherwise look very similar. Nickmil.

    so now i know i would be able to get a t-15 or a t-176. i want the 176 because then i would be able to sue the dana 300 transfer case but the 176 is down in texas and im in wisconsin, but i think i would be able to get it for a deal which would offset the shipping. on the other hand there is a t-15 about 25 min south of me. im really not sure on what to do.

    alright so i have made a decision. i found a t-15 about 20 min south of me and i talked to guy thats selling it and he only wants a hundred bucks for it. he said there is only 65,000 miles on it but who knows if thats right or ont. one question i have is will my t-14 bellhousing work with the t-15? he has a bellhousing for it i belive but i figure if i dont need it theres no reason why i should get it.

    IIRC you need the T-15 bell.
