Shifting gears on upgrade path

    Well, i've been noodling over my options for imroving the breathing capabilities on my flattie and I've taken just about a 180* turn from the direction in which I started out. I'm looking for ideas here guys.

    My '2A is fresh, and just about bone stock, except for a Solex carb and Perronix ignition module. Initially I wanted to go with a Clifford research header, but they tell me it won't clear the steering shaft on a Saginaw conversion. Ok, so I'll just have to polish out an F-head exhaust manifold and use stock pipes. I can live with that. With an M38 flanged exhaust system, it will sound really unique as it is.

    On the intake side, I was planning to fab up a 2x1bbl tube intake and mount two Solexes on it, with a crossover tube. Then I got to thinking about how cold-blooded my Jeep really is, even with the heat riser valve working properly and a 195* thermostat in place. Winter carburetor icing seems like it would be a real problem without heat. Hmmm.

    What I'm down to is the idea of using a stock L-head intake, and milling the top offso I can incorporate a bolt-on adaptor plate for a Weber 32/36 or Holley 5200 progressive 2bbl. carb. Then top it all of with an MSD-5 ignition module.

    Idears guys? Fabbing up my own tube header is just a bit more than I want to bite off. Is there another alternative?

    Steve the last F4 header I had on my Jeep was a Clifford I purchased in 1981 or 1982; I purchased it not knowing if it would fit; it was for a CJ5 and exited inside the frame, not outside like my old homemade header did.
    I had done my sagi conversion in 1976.....so the header worked for my application.....
    sad to say, I wasn't into picture taking of mods like that back then....

    Hah! Think I've got my carb heat issue solved. :twisted:

    found this pic of my F4 with header
    this is the homemade job
    the first time I took the body off, circa 1979
    this one exited fenderwell style
    had extra cut-out for opening header w/o removing muffler
    also, the sagi conversion had already been done by this time
    this header cleared everything, but inner fender was trimmed
    for exit clearance

    Back in '97 at the first PA Jeep Jamboree, I met a guy named David Rersoll from Wilton, CT. He was running a '46 with an L head and a Weber 2bbl. It was a really nicely set up rig. He and his daughter ran the Jamboree together. He had trailered his rig to the Jam in a fully enclosed trailer with a mini-shop :shock:
    I have his phone #, you could give it a try... although he gave me the number 9 yrs ago... if you want to try it let me know, I'll PM it to you.

    I have a CLifford header with the Saginaw conversion. It is a tight fit, and I did the conversion after the header. I actually was able to run the intermediate shaft of the saginaw system through the motor mount, and forward to box. It was not easy, but it works really well. Also, that Clifford header, was the only mod that I could really feel in my seat. With the combo of a 2 inch exhaust, and the header, that little four cylinder revved up pretty nicely. I would give the header a try, theres a good chance that the steering can be tweaked, cause the header doesnt need much. Good luck

    What kind of muffler did you use, and how loud is it?

    I've never really been a fan of a four-banger with loud pipes on it...
