    Hi everyone,

I need help diagnosing a “phantom tick” in my 68-225V6

I was on a rather long road trip last week and everything was going fine, then all of the sudden I hear this faint “ticking” sound that starts out real soft, then gets louder and louder, but then it fades away just as soft as it started.

It's still doing it, and it doesn’t matter if I’m accelerating, decelerating, revving the engine, or just letting it idle...the ticking sound just comes and goes completely on it’s own.

I’ve looked at all the exterior stuff such as manifolds, engine mounts, etc... I’ve been able to determine that the sound is timed with the engine and not road speed, but I cannot for the life of me reproduce the ticking. It’s like there’s a little gremlin hiding away under the hood running around tapping on things whenever he feels like it...:smash:

At this point I’m guessing I’ll have to dive into the engine, which I’ve never done before. So I was hoping to get some advice on what I should be looking for.

    Thanks

    Allan

Pick up a stethoscope from a flaps, it will help you narrow down if its inside the engine or not.
    Good luck.

Okay, I hadn't thought about checking the pullys.

If I want to look at my lifters, I just need to pull off the valve covers right...gimme a break, I'm still learning all this.

Timing chain is pretty apparent and won't go away. You'll hear it more at idle and be able to feel by placing your hand on the distributor head.

Change the oil, and substitute a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for one qt. reg. oil., and see if that helps. I'd do that before trying to remove the lifters. MMO is good stuff for ticking lifters.

What Ron said. It's worked for me many times. Give this a shot before you start tearing things apart.

I agree. I have one that ticks kinda like that when it gets low on oil. Just filling it back up with regular oil makes the ticking go away. I would try the MMO before I started pulling anything apart.

I'm not a rep for these guys, but I have used BG chemicals for a long time now, and I am totally sold on this line of products. I have used marvel mystery oil with success, I have also used Winns products with success, and I have used Engine Restore with success. But BG chemicals has had the greater level of success and will be my choice for life.
But then again, I have never been totally sold on a "bandaid-in-a-can"
