    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

My carb started leaking gas out of the gasket between the intake and the carb. I rebuilt it with new gaskets and still no luck. I bought a rebuilt carb and torqued it down to the right specs. Still no luck. Gas is pouring out when the jeep is running. It will soak the top of the intake in 15 seconds. Could it be a problem in the air intake manifold? I know its not the float or the pin. I need help. It also runs very rough and will stall out every few minutes. What could it be? Possibly spark?

If you got a new carb then it can't be the carb. Two doing the exact same thing is not likely. Maybe a cracked fuel line spraying on the carb. Where your decribing the leak I've never seen a leak there (you are talking about the carb base gasket right?) Even if it was, the amount of fuel that enters the intake at idle is minimal and it wouldn't be spraying.

Actually, now that I look at it, its not leaking out of the base. Its leaking out near the throttle. The only thing i can imagine it being is the float or needle, but I've replaced both of them in my old carb and set the float level and drop, and the new carb already has it set, hopefully by a proffesional. I can't imagine anything else. its very strange.

Just for the record, its not spraying, it starts dribbling out rather quickly about 5 to 10 seconds after the engine has been running. I am clueless???

Maybe excessive fuel pressure. Do you have an electric pump?

:iagree: Possibly excessive fuel pressure. Overpowering the seals in the carb. That would make the motor run rich and drown it if it cannot keep up.

Take the top off and make sure the float is set right and the needle and seat are not dirty. Mine did this once and that was the fix.

I'm guessing stuck or improperly set float, or something in the needle/seat.

I do not have an electric fuel pump. Its mechanical off the block. High fuel pressure was the first thing that came to my mind, but as long as the float and needle/seat are good, I wouldn't think high fuel pressure could be an issue. I guess I am going to try to return the carb, possibly I just have really bad luck. Any more ideas??

Throw away that old POS and buy a Holley Truck Avenger 670 cfm ($400.00).

But first you do need to check your fuel pressure.

Go to Pep Boys and get one of those cheap fuel pressure gauges you can attach to your fuel line. and check your pressure with the jeep running.

Your return line might be just a little bit clogged.

Also have you check your bolts between the carb and the intake? Mine are torqued down to 60 lb. The required 12 lb leaks fuel everywhere...

Also I put gasket sealer between the carb and intake. Freaking sucking in air.

Could you post a photo showing where the leak is coming from. I just find it hard to believe you have two carbs with the same exact problem. Gotta be something else causing it.

Might be a little too much carb for this app (232 or 258 with a 1V Carter YF IIRC). R)

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

I would like to keep my yf. Could it be possible that I am getting an occasional misfire caused by weak spark, which is inturn not using all the fuel it sucks in and it is leaking out the throttle body? My carb to intake gasket is torqued to specifications which I beleive is 16lbs? I wanted to use a gasket sealer but I was afraid it would get broken down by the gas. Any that you reccomend? I will try my best to get pics but I have no way at this time.

There shouldn't be any liquid gas getting past the float bowl. The carburetor is supposed to convert the liquid into a combustible mist of air and fuel - liquid gas won't explode, vapors will.

I expect you have a problem with the float bowl overflowing and draining down the inside of the barrel. It could then seep out around the thropttle shaft and make the outside of the carb wet. I don't have a lot of experience with YFs, so I can't be sure.

Any fuel that is not used will simply go out the exhaust it won't back up. It seems to me that there has to be some simple explanation for what is going on. Your original carb leaked, you rebuilt the carb and it still leaked and then you bought a new carb and it leaks in the same place. I don't think it's coincidence. I would look at everything real close and make sure your not missing something. Again a cracked fuel line perhaps leaking in a way that it gives the illusion of the throttle plate leaking? Not sure just throwing that out there.

Wonder if the flair on the input line at the carb is cracked?

I'm gonna check the fuel pressure first, then I will assume that I am not closing the carb right and the float is sticking. Now that I think about it, the new carb was missing a spring on the throttle shaft. To replace it with the spring from my old carb, I had to open up the throttle body to unsrew the throttle plate and remove the shaft. Maybe there is something that I am not catching that I should know about when closing the carb. Is there anything I could be missing involving the float/seat/needle?

Stridor, search the threads on this... it has been discussed several times before at this site.

A common YF problem is that people lose the accelerator-pump check valve ball and weight. They sit in a vertical bore inside the float bowl, and are easy to drop or forget during a rebuild.

Float-bowl overflow then will come out the middle-underside of the bowl around the vertical pump linkage that passes up through the bowl.

    Worth looking into..

    Good luck,

    Pete

I don't believe I opened up the body where the check ball and weight are, just where the throttle plate is. I lost the weight in my old carb, then made one and it performed better then the new carb is no. still wasn't perfect tho.

Maybe your carb float has a leak and is sinking?
