Just purchased a 1964 CJ-6 Dually. It is a ex fire unit belonging to a Texas fire Dept. I have a copy of the original registration dated March 1964. It is equipted with the F-4 engine, 4 speed trans, rear PTO, 4X4. and a Dana 70 rear axle with 5:88 gears. The rear is equipted with leaf springs---to many to count, and dual shocks. The Jeep had 31,500 original miles. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the Dual wheel option as it was apparently a factory job. The tank conversion and equipt was obviously done at the fire dept's shop. Was trying to get information on production numbers to determine the rariety of the Jeep.
I seen the one posted in 2002 of a CJ-5 dually that belonged to a fire dept as well. Mine looks wierd and can only imagiane what a CJ-5 would look like.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. The jeep is in excellent condition with the only rust in the rear bed where the tank sat. Purchased it because it was definately different and now not sure what to do with it.:flag:

Wow. That must be a neat Jeep!

Not sure that anyone has production numbers on DRW Jeeps since they were conversions after the factory. Suffice to say, they aren't common and CJ-6s aren't common and FIRE CJ-6's (which are just plain cool) aren't real common either. ;)

    Hi Don. Welcome to EarlyCJ5.

If it has 5.88 gears, what's the axle in the front? It sure sounds interesting. Can you get us some pictures? Inside, outside, and underneath?

It sure would make a good addition to the CJ6 Fire Jeeps list.

    Howdy from another 6 owner...

Not sure if you ran across my CJ6 Blog - which I'm currently rebuilding/redesigning but still some good stuff there.

The ebay pics show familiar spring packs and reenforcement strap welded along the frame. I wonder if that's stock from the factory.

Just talked to the fire dept personnel who is famaliar with the Jeep. It was there during his watch. He said they tore up the front axle and removed the unit. I just confirmed it. the 3rd member is missing. He will try to dig up past records and pictures. Supposed to get back to me soon.

Not sure, but the fire dept official I talked to who is familiar with the jeep said they did some mods on the drive train to accommodate the heavy steel water tank. Can see indications of wheel rub high in the rear fender wells. Mayabe lifted to give more clearence. Anyway, he is supposed to get back with me with more info and possible pictures if he can locate them.

Just about any Jeep that is used off-road will have those.

Thanks for the reply, and yes, I came across your site. Is this a factory dually, or an add on??

Please see reply to similiar question. At present, the front unit is missing, and according to the fire dept maint chief, it got tore up suring use. Maybe the ratio was the problem. He is researching more info for me.

Look up to the third post. They were aftermarket conversions. ;) The factory didn't make DRW Jeeps that I've ever read about. Could be wrong but I've never seen one that was "factory". From Toledo? Maybe, but not off the assembly line that way.

Hi--You say conversions after the factory. Who did these conversions??
Was it the dealers?? I got a reply from a site quoting a worker from the factory in charge of CJ-6 dually's going to the Korean Gov't as trencher units.

 Maybe they (factory) did, but none of the documentation I've seen shows any dual rear wheel vehicles. Least not for normal public consumption.

Who? Companies that retrofitted them. Same as you can buy trucks retrofitted with different beds now, etc. Sears sold kits to convert vehicles to dual rear wheels too IIRC. Hubs and fenders.

Yep, thats my Jeep. I don't think the straps were factory, but added on by the depts maint unit. I talked to a guy in the shop familiar with the unit and said the did some mods to it. Can see tire rub marks in the rear fender well so blocks may have been added for extra height. They had a heave steel tank in the rar, according to him.

BTW, I can say nothing with certainty. Soon as you do someone digs up something to prove otherwise. ;)

If the factory did make them I've not seen records of it. Usually they split stuff out by body style, open body, fire truck, Perkins engine, etc. I'd think that the dual rear wheel would be significant enough to be included.
