So I am at the point to put the rear tank back on the frame - after cleaning and painting and replacing the sending unit. BUT I cannot get the old sending unit out. I used to PB Blaster but no go. Am I turning it right? - counterclockwise. Or does it even turn. I did a search but no luck. Let me know if you know because I finally have a weekend that I can get some stuff done. I also threw in a picture of my not new, but newly appreciated shop tool. I couldn't do without it.

There are usually little tabs that stick up around the outer edge of the sending unit. You can tap them with a screwdriver and hammer (counterclockwise, as I recall).

IIRC mine was held in with 3 screws and then the ring was tapped counter clockwise (as stated above), however, even though the sending unit was stock, the tank is not. Good Luck. Oh, BTW, your new tool is awesome! I imagine it will get plenty of use!

When I replaced mine I had to tap a lock ring counter clockwise and pull it out.

I have a heater just like that. Standing with it to my back warming I burned a hole in my jeans. Be careful!

As for the tank if all else fails I would think you could break the retainer ring out of it.

More PB Blaster. Knock all the mud off, I got mine to slide a little left and right to loosen it up before trying to get it to turn. I used a wooden stick like a nammer handle. I sheared off a tab using just a screw driver. And you don't want any sparks around those fumes. !!

I used a wire brush and air hose to clean mine up. If you look closely at the picture there are three flanges that the sending unit latches under. I used a punch/hammer to turn it counter clockwise. Be carefull of the crud so it don't get in your tank.

Thanks for all the input guys. I let it all soak in a puddle of blaster over night. After that a screw driver and hammer did the trick. It looks as thought the PO did a little JB weld work on the bottom corner and there is a screw around the same area with a rubber gasket or such. 2 Questions? Screw stock, or just a fast easy not wise fix? and 2, Remove JB weld and weld in some stock? and special type or just weld steel will work.
thanks again, and walterv, I am going to have to clean the tank well because I know there has to be dirt in it plus I can heat something inside rattle. Who knows???

Well my thread flew to page 2 rather quickly with all the posts at the moment. What are your comments/suggestions with the jb weld and sheet metal fix?
    Thanks Again
