I am restoring a 79 cj5 and could use some advice. I have removed all the interior and wiring. Now I am thinking of how I am going to get the body off to repair some rust damage and do some body work. I could really use some advice on the best way to remove the body from the frame and also anything I should be cautious about from here on. I also could use some help on the types of lifts, jacks, jack stands or whatever could be useful and other equipment that I will need to purchase. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A cherry picker (engine hoist) is helpful for lifting the tub off if by yourself. Nickmil

On my 2A I used 2 ratchet type pullers. I rigged 1 in front and 1 in the rear and the top of the pullers tied to the rafters in the garage. I just ratcheted up and rolled the chassis out from under the body then lowered the body onto saw horses. I was able to do it by myself, just be certian your garage rafters are up to the weight. It's not so bad using 2 pullers since you are distributing the weight and the body is not that heavy.

That's what i did. I didn't even bother removing anything from the interior. After removing the grill and fenders I just disconnected the firewall connector, brake line clutch rod, speedo cable and e brake and lifted the whole tub up with a chain fall.

I used the hydraulic lift on the back of an old Ford 8N tractor. I put the 2 lower 3-point hitch arms under the rear section, lifted it up, and drove away. I can't recall exactly how the hitch arms hooked into the tub - but it worked. That was on a '79 CJ-7. Those were the days….

  8. A few cases of beer and some friends should do the trick!! If you are a few friends short you can attach the roll bar to a rafter and roll the chassis out from under it.
