stabbing distributor frustrated

    I spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to get my new hei distrbutor to drop in and line up with the oil pump. Any tips or tricks ? 225 v6 odd fire

    Line the oil pump up with the distributor? R)

    Seriously. Use a screwdriver, line the oil pump up with the distributor. Then drop the distributor in about 10-15* counter-clockwise from where you want it, as the gears mesh it will pull around.

    not that big of a deal,drop in where you want it have someone bump the engine over while you gently press down on the dist,drop right in:rofl:

    Except that your timing won't line up any more. It gets easier after about 10 or 15 installs :)

    I finally got it to drop in. I took some light tapping with a plastic hamer. With everything being new I guess it it is a little tight. I tried the other methods, but it wouldnt drop in. I estimated the rotation at contact with the oil pump and carefully taped it in with a plastic hamer. It made me real nervous tapping on the new distributor and oil pump. Thankyou for your help guys, I dont think I could of tapped on the distributor without knowing I had tried all other options. THANKYOU

    taping on the dis.is a not a good option. make sure you have oil psi when you start the motor. some motores you would push the oil pump drive shaft down and it would not be driven by the dis.= no oil psi.
    I dont know if the 225 is that way.

    I don't understand what you're saying about pushing the oil pump shaft down.

    If the distributor meshed with the pump shaft then he's good to go. That's easy enough to check by looking at the distributor shaft. The collar should sit on the timing cover, there should not be any gap there. Then the hold down assembly goes on top of the collar (for reference as to what I'm talking about with "collar").

    The last little bit to get the distributor stabbed in can be tough. I usually put a thin film of oil on the gasket to make it slide in easier. The last little bit can be a bear.

    Jeepen - I know what your talking about. The 225 is not that way - the oil pump shaft will not let it drop without fitting in the drive slot.
