I was wondering what people think about this tranny? I've always been under the impression that it's basically just a 4 speed version of the T90 with the same strengths and weaknesses?

To get a better top speed on the highway, would it be a decent swap into a CJ5 with the F-134, especially if combined with an overdrive?

I believe it also has a granny low first gear?

T98 is much stronger than the T90. High gear is 1 to 1 so you get the same speed with either transmission. You get a very low 1st gear. Overdrive added is where you get more speed and that's if the engine is strong enough to push the JEEP.

T98 is the older brother to the T18 and has limited applicability. If you are looking at a four speed with a deeper first gear, the T18 is a good choice. Try Novak for adaptibility of these transmissions. If you are looking for a reduction in RPM's at road speed, an overdrive is the ticket. Herm the overdrive guy can hook you up.

T-98 is strong, T-98 is wise...... I salvaged mine from a '66 CJ-5 that once belonged to Fl Highway maint. PTO deck on rear for Mower deck. Never appeared to be rebuilt and as long as it has oil in it, I dont know how you could ever hurt one behind a f134, 6r even a V6.

It's amazing that the T90 was used in FC 170 Duallys rated 8K GVW!
    W/ the T98 the FC170 Dually was rated 9K GVW, but it's probably 4 x's the strength and weight as a T90.

i have a t98 and i love it. plenty strong to handle 34"s and moderate wheeling. pulling into traffic sucks with the low 1st and 5.38s.

interesting article about the T98.... now the question is, where can I get one? hahaha.

Also, the article mentions it's hard to find parts for them. Anyone know of a good source of T98 parts?

    thanks again,
    evan

I am very satisfied with mine. Having the 4 speed is one of the reasons I bought it, I love the underdrive gear!!!

Would you be able to find out if he's got an extra? That'd be awesome!

    thanks again,
