Okay, I have everything minus driveshafts back together since replacing my starter drive gear turned into a new flywheel, transmission rebuild. Now when I charged the battery and hit the starter button all I get is a HMMMMMM. My new drive gear and flywheel match the originals. I'm not sure where to start diagnosing. I have done everything I know to do. That is replace parts.

    Any ideas?

I thought bendix was what kind of joints I had in my front axles?

Isnt the bendix and the drive the same thing?

I just put a brand new one on. How could that have gone wrong?

the bendix is what kicks out the drive gear to engage the driven gear on the flywheel.

bendix is a popular word. it can refer to brakes, axles, and in this case a piece of the starter. let me see if i can dig up you a pic.

Thanks, sounds like I managed to put the starter together wrong. I picture would be great.

oh, my bad you got a 3a. are you using the stock floor start? if so the lever/linkage is hooked up, right? i was thinking 3b and later stuff, 3a uses a lever to push out the drive gear that is attached to the floor start.

Right so, basicly the lever is the bendix? Maybe I have it on backwards. We will find out tomorrow.

if the "hmmmm" sound you are hearing is the starter motor turning away without engaging, then it sure could be the bendix.

Its more like an electrical hum like a motor trying but not turning.

THE BATTERY!! Before I started tearing stuff up again I let it charge for a few hours. I pushed the button in by hand it was the quitest I have ever heard the motor turn over. No fire but I know everything is fine. Didn't quite have enough juice to keep it rolling long enough.
