I have been trying to find a 304v8 for my 72cj5. I found an AMC 304v8 at a wrecking yard right by my home but it is in an old Javelin. They say it has started but haven't tried for awhile.

What kind of changes would need to be made to this engine to get it installed into a Jeep? would it fit easily or would I need to change some components?

You'd probably need to change the exhaust manifolds, but otherwise it's the same. I'd expect you'd pay a premium for the Javelin 304 because it's "rare" (true or not).

Where are you located? You can probably find a 360 easier than a 304, and it's a direct replacement. Which engine do you have now? The 4.0L is a neat replacement for a 232 or 258, would provide about the same power as the 304, and would get better mileage. There's a forum dedicated to swapping the 4.0L into CJs here: http://www.cjoffroad.com/forums/default.asp

The Drivers side exhaust manifold is cj specific to clear the steering. If you are putting in a 304, I'd go with Tim's advice and upgrate to a 360. The blocks are the same, and all the accessories will swap right over. Any AMC 360 from 72 to 91 will work. (so will a 401  )Just make sure you use that cj specific exh manifold.

I am located in Utah. I found the 304v8 at an auto yard that is 15 miles from my home. so no need for shipping or anything. The jeep had the 304v8 in it as the stock engine so I was hoping for the same.
