anyone want a jeep!!!!

    yup i had her running just fine with out the mufflers on....
    now she fires right up, then after about 10-15secs she starts backfiring and puking throught he carb a touch.... when you try and blip the gas she dies..... i give up:(

    maybe i will pull the mufflers

    and right now there is no air cleaner on it... but the k&n is in the corner

    sounds like the old potato in the exhaust pipe trick to me.:):coffee::hurrican:

    to me, this really indicates it could be exhaust, could be carb, (or air entering/leaving either system) but I don't think it is timing.

    i dont think its timing either, something is just not right in the fuel/air catagory... she starts like she might be flooded, then she runs real rough coughs a bit out the carb, backfires... its kinda like when you have the flu and your farting and puking all at the same time....

    To me, anytime it's backfiring and spitting through the carb, it's an ignition issue. Timing is the most logical place to begin. Also, check your wire connections.

    Sorry this is still going on. :cry:

    What engine do you have in it? I have a 67 cj5 with a 225 and had similar problems. Believe it or not when I went to put on the new dist cap it was off by 1. Meaning that I had to rotate the distributor counter cloockwise so that the number 2 point on the distributor was in the number 1 postion. After I did this she ran like a champ. Give it a try and see what happens, it may cure your problem also.

    I still think it's not timing. It starts up fine. If the timing is off it would exhibit symptoms right off the bat.

    hei are great. I reciently purchased one through a highly reputable custom distributor builder and had nothing but frustration. There are some poorly manufactured parts out there for odd fire distributors. The two I had trouble with were distributor caps and the main distributor shaft. The brass tabs inside the cap were incorrect. The ears on the main distributor shaft were not long enough to triger the pickup coil at cranking speed or at an idle. After 3 months of frustration and a lot of money I have gone back to a stock distributor that has allways been easy to get parts for that work. It sounds like you may have one of those poorly miss manufactured distributor caps to me. I wish you the best. I am going to go with an msd box for my next distributor upgrade.

    that's what I was hinting at. I have a hard time imagining timing "going bad" after 15 seconds

    Yeah, good point. I do know that a very lean fuel problem can cause backfiring. We once ran a car on methanol so lean the headers were glowing by the end of the heat race because we were at a lower altitude and hadn't changed the jets. I don't know. It's hard to diagnose these things long distance. :) I'd still like to know what's going on with the exhaust system he installed, which seems to have caused the problem.

    As an aside, I just replaced the points on my F head and while doing so, the insulation where the bolt goes through the side of the distributor broke apart. I threw something together to insulate it but it would not fire. Once I redid the insulating washers to isolate the hot wire from the distributor, it fired right up. That's why I suggested his was ignition related.

    I do noticed he hasn't been on here today. That a good sign? :rofl:

    im back...
    i took a day away from it.. getting really frustrated... according to magnaflow they can be mounted in either direction, so i do not thnk thats the problem.... it will fire right off the bat, run for a few secs(5-15), and then start having the issues..... i am taking today off from it again, i just dont have the heart right now to go down there... im still on vacation next week, so hopefully after a few breakfast beers tomorrow i will be ready to attack again, i am going to pull the mufflers first thing and see what happens....

    and i have difficulty believe that D.U.I. makes a poor product, i have just heard way to much about them, but if after i pull the mufflers and the problem does not go away, i will be on the phone with them...

    well, i pulled the mufflers this am, and the puking through the carb actually got worse, it shot fire out the carb, this usually tells me im 180 out, now i dont know what to think. she wont even fully fire now :( so should i swap the dist 180 or what?

    When mine was 180* out it ran perfectly just sluggish and the passenger side exhaust was cold...

    Back-firing through the carb indicates you're too far advanced to me.

    ok, i gotta run out right now, but i will try and screw with it some more in a bit..... I just dont understand what is happening to this thing.... why so much worse with the mufflers off?? and i did double check with magnaflow, those can be mounted in either direction, so thats not my problem either

    in post #56 you mentioned that had to try and hook up the vacuum advance.
    is it not hooked up now and is the vacuum advance where you can't move the distributor to get to 5*btc?bob

    I said it before, I'll say it again, I don't believe it has anything to do with the mufflers.

    I also don't think it has anything to do with the muffler. I had one do something simular and it turned out that I had issues with the vac and mech advance. My oldest put the wrong vac port to the advance and it jammed the vac module and streached one of the spring for the mech.

    If possible - can you get your hands on another HEI? I might be able to send you a known good one that you could try to see if the distro got dammaged some how.
