    Hi All,

Did a search and also sent an email to Herm, Great guy by the way and a joy to speak with. I am having trouble with my OD grinding when shifting back to direct drive. Herm told me to pull it and look at the synchro. I went out to pull it per Herm's instructions and need a little help. I can't figure out how to remove the 5 - 3 1/2" long bolts. They seem to be wedged between the rear of the unit and the unit itself. Do I loosen them a little at a time and pry the unit back? Anyway please take a look and let me know your thoughts.

    As always thanks.

you need to remove the pto adapter. it looks as if you have removed the five bolts that hold the cover on.now take the cover off and you will see four to five more bolts, cant remember exactly how many, remove them and remove the pto adapter. the five bolts then can be easily removed.

A personal perspective here. I owned a(nother)71 with 4.88's and OD. The vehicle started and drove fine with the OD engaged. I never shifted out of OD untill I needed to go low. A lot of guys liking "splitting gears" and shifting the extra time. I found this unnessary and at the time (pre internet and Herm) parts were hard to come by. I made the attemp to shift as little as possible, thereby keeping wear to a minimum. Don't know if this would work with your setup, just throwing a thought for the future out there.

    Thanks for the input Lamar!

Jeepdaddy, Herm did tell me it won't hurt anything to leave it the way it is. It shifts great when I am at a complete stop. I generally only shift into OD when I am at highway speed in 4th gear otherwise way too much shifting for me. Good advice.

Quick update, I can't say it enough, Herm is a great guy. He just called me and Lamar was spot on, what I have is a PTO adapter that the PO made a cover for. I am going to remove that first and then the OD.

As always thanks to everyone here for the wealth of information and great help!

Removed the PTO adapter and OD unit itself tonight. Makes it much easier to work on when you actually know what you are dealing with. Herm told me he has a regular cover for it so I am going to leave the PTO adapter off. Not sure if the problem I am having is in the unit itself or in the "planetary system". I sent an email to Herm for more advice. The OD grinds very badly when shifting from OD to direct drive when moving. If I am at a complete stop it does not do it. If I remember correctly Herm told me the synchro is sticking.
I'll let you know what he has to say.

    Hear ya loud and clear!

I'll take a pic of where is at right now and once the OD is completely removed. Herm replied to email this am. Told me to send the whole unit to him and he will give me a quote once he receives it and looks it over.

Just curious, does it grind when going into direct drive in any of the gears, or only when shifting high gear ( 3rd or 4th)? I had a problem shifting my new Saturn from OD into DD when I was in 4th gear. It shifted fine in and out on
1st, 2nd and 3rd. I discovered that I can eliminate the grind if I pop the tranny into neutral, shift into DD and them put it back in 4th, it doesn't grind. I know it's not the synchros because the unit probably doesn't have 1,000 miles on it.

As requested here are a few pics. 1st is the T-case with the barrell still in it, 2nd is PTO adapter, OD and barrell.

To answer Posimoto's question it does not seem to matter what gear, I tried double clutching and letting the RPM's come down. Still grinds going from OD to DD. When I come to a complete stop it shifts fine.

I'm trying to disassemble the drivetrain, to have the tranny replaced. in the pic labeled "0008" above, how do you remove the dohicky on the right of the pic?
