I know have dual exhaust with glass packs that exit in front of the rear tire. Put on a little over a 100 miles Friday, Man it was load... I have a 258 with clifford intake, mc2100, hei, daul outlet headers & 2.5 in exhaust. My jeep is quick and fun. I need something qeuter like a nice magna flow. I don't want to hurt the preformance any. I've also heard that 2.5 inch single exhaust flows better on a in-line 6. What do ya'll think stay with dauls infront of the rear tire or single out the drivers side. What do you think would be best for fumes too????
    Thanks
    Merry Christmas!

For fumes you want the pipe(s) to exit out the back.

It's been proven over and over that old fashioned glass packs hurt performance. Stick on a set of good modern performance mufflers and you'll pick up some performance and tone down some of the harshness in the noise. As for single versus dual :?

I would get those pipes out the back if possible. With dual exhaust though with true mufflers, you might not have enough room for two pipes. At least that is what my exhaust guy said. Not my exhaust guy just the guy who replaced my glasspacks. When I do the 4.0 head conversion I'm going back to a single exhaust with a real muffler. I'm tired of the noise too.

    And I'm not that oldR)R)R) 31 tomorrow!!!

JMO - unless there's a really big advantage to a dual muffler setup, I'd want a single muffler. It'll fit up inside the frame, be cheaper, and be easier to protect from rock damage.

Do you know whose headers you have? If so, ask them what the recommended configurations are. If your header comes into a single collector, then go with a single pipe - once the gases have been mixed, there's no possible advantage to dual pipes, other than the looks. With dual collectors, you might consider two pipes, if there's a chance of exploiting the 'extractor' effect. Depends on the design of the header.

Expanding a bit on what timgr said; At least on the newer trucks the pipe manufacturers are recommending single pipes to maintain torque. I have been shopping for an exhaust system for my wife’s 06 and all of them designed for torque were singles.

I have a pair of turbo bullets on my 74 that exit out the back. They are very mellow sounding and don't drone. I think they were a good low cost choice for that application. But I also have a V8. If you have a single collector on your header I would do a single turbo. If you have a dual collector I would do a dual turbo setup with a bit smaller tube and an H pipe.

I too will be going with the single out the back w/my V-8... probably 2 1/2" w/flowmaster Super 44.

    High5; Happy B-Day a day early! (And you're not that old, you're still a Pup!R)R))

While there is "some" power to be gained from a dual exhaust...Most of that power will be were you won't really use it much. If you were building a Jeep that operated mostly in upper RPM range...I would say stick with the duals. But...in your case, a large single pipe into a free flowing muffler, going out behind the rear tire will make you the happiest.
I have seen many folks (including myself) get fooled by how much power something gained from a loud(er) exhaust system. It sure "seemed" faster...but when we put it on my dyno...we will find that power was lost everywhere but the very top rpm.

If you want to keep the dual exhaust (just because)...then I would suggest a smaller diameter pipe (2 inch) into a couple of quality performance mufflers and run the pipes out the back behind the wheels.

I have the hedman dual outlet header with 2.25 inch pipes out the back with turn downs on them. I don't have any problem with exhaust smell entering the Jeep unless I only have the rear window open. Any other time it's fine. I'm just tired of the sound. Makes it hard to hear the radio with the exhaust, heater, and I can even hear the fuel pump running that's on the frame. So, I would really like to go a single exhaust with a muffler. I wanted to go dual extreme 40's, but the exhaust guy said he wouldn't touch it. I wish there was more competition in town, maybe he wouldn't be so cocky about what he wants to do. Was a lot cheaper this way for now.

Well, Happy b-day!! I'm 41 with 81 year old ears. I can't even have a conversation in my jeep!! I have dual outlet headers. I was really thinking about single exhaust out the back. not straight out but kinda turned out to the side. Plus single out the back would be soooo much cheaper than dauls out the back. I want a healthy mello!!!!

Oh, I don't know the brand of headers they came with the jeep!

My sons CJ7 had a .040 over 258witha Clifford intake,Holley 390,and a Clifford dual outlet header. From the collectors it dumped into what looked like a custom built 2 into 1 stainless box that exited into a stainless single exhaust and one of those stainless big name mufflers and dumped out the back on the drivers side. That Jeep has AWESOME power! It would light up the 35's(which I swear he did to just annoy me...damn maybe I'm getting old...)It was quieter than my CJ5,258 and single Advance Auto(they were the only ones with the exhaust in stock the night before "Jeepfest 2006").I can't believe he sold this fiberglassed bodied sweet rig for $3000. and bought a P.O.S. '86 Monte SS(damn, maybe I'm getting old!).[IMG]
