Hello all, I seem to have developed a new squeak, and I'm not entirely sure where it is coming from. The squeak appears to be semi-intermitten, sometimes it is there, other times it isnt, but it started up enough this evening to make me want to start the diagnosis.

    First the details:
    82 CJ5 - 258 i6

Whenever I go above 25 mph I start to hear this rapidly repeating squeak, and at first I thought it may be a belt. My V-belt is looking a bit worn / cracked. I tried some belt conditioner spray and that seemed to only temporarily fix it (or was it part of the intermitten squeak). If I am over 25 mph and come off the clutch and gas it remains, until I drop below 25 mph. Would a worn belt cause this sort of thing? I read a few posts on here on squeaks and someone mentioned deglazing the belt pulleys? Any special cleaner / chemical to do that?

I plan to replace it anyways, but if there is anything else I can troubleshoot while it is together or apart, I would rather knock it out at once.

    Thanks!

    Jason

Jack up one wheel at a time and check your wheel bearings. They can chirp and squeek. They may sound different with the weight off of them, but they should be silent, no clunking or grinding. Insttead of spending money on belt conditioner, I'd spend it on a new belt.

    Thanks Posi,
I'll grab the jack this afternoon and give the wheels a spin. Neighbor has a squeaky old Chevy so the belt dressing was free! :)

You might also check the driveshaft u joints. They'll chip as well, although I usually hear them when starting off.

No really loud noises when I spin the tires. Maybe a really slight scratchy sound, but very minimal. To grease the wheels I see a zerk fitting. Is it different grease than what I use on the front end zerks?

Sorry guys for all the newbie questions.
Replaced the belt last night and went for a cruise. No chirp or squeak, but this am taking my son to school it started back up again? I just replaced the alternator belt, the other one looked good with no cracks, etc. Rick, you mentioned the driveshaft u-joints, is it obvious what I am looking for? Also, would wheel bearings make noise all the time, or just at certain speeds?

disc brake pads, if worn, the wear indicator will hit the rotor, chirping like a bird.
Spindle bearings can chirp as well, unless you have the hubs unlocked.

I have a squeak in my CJ-5 that I've ben chasing down for a long time. Happens every time I go over a bump and it sounds like something atached to the body. I've come to the conclusion that being that the Jeep is 28 years old, it may be time for new body mount cushions. Don't know how difficult they are to change.

From what I have read they arent too terribly difficult, if the 28 year old bolts arent rusted frozen. Lots of PB blaster for about a week on the bolts will help.

I've jumped on my bumpers to see if I can reproduce the squeak I am getting, and have had no luck with that either.

i vote for u-joints or wheel bearings. any visable slop in any of them. Can you pinpoint were the sound is coming from?

Definately somewhere in the front end of the jeep. I got out last night with my grease gun and hit just about every zerk in the front end, and the drive shafts. Took her out of the neighborhood and got up to varying speeds in the 25 - 45 mile an hour range with no noises. All, the other thing I did check when I had it up on the jack was if I had any play/slop in the wheels, which I didn't. How would I tell good from bad U-Joints?

Getting set to take it on a short road trip this evening over to a friends house, so that will give me a little more of an extended trip to see if it acts up.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and I'll report back my findings.
