got the 134 f head in - it runs!!! the history of the engine is that it was pulled running fine from another jeep whose destinay is elswhere - I needed a motor and jumped on it.

shortly after starting it started to smoke - white, looks like, more on acceleration. NO POWER zero zip nadda - thought I was in the rodeo- try to drive her and she stutters and coughs. what gives?

    fuel mixture??

    Timing?

    Smoke?

have oil pressure, it is undrivable in it's current condition Also, the valve train is louder than my last one...tap tap tap tappie, I just cheked the valve specs prior to installing it- 18 intake, 16 exhaust - all was good, fresh oil in the am, it just had fresh oil, but it was suggested I change it since it had sat.

it was running fine the last time i started it, might just need some tweaking, did you use the carb i had on it? I know i never really fine tuned it, just got it running, drove it around a few times and parked it, if you need a hand sometime on it let me know and ill come down and help, if you get it going by sat going to come up and run the trails?

I was over in Queensbury today and checked to make sure my dad hadn't sold off the F head! LOL I'm going to drop it in the MB for a while. I'm going to follow this post as the Fhead we have hasn't been started in about 26 years.

thank for th offer - but man you got enough on your plate - take some time for a cold one

It'll be running for Sat - but I have to go out to Pulaski - our new family pet is ready to be picked up - a Flemish giant rabbit!
the pic in the link is just an example of how big these bunnies get, we are getting a baby.

yes I used your carb - might try mine in the am. kinda gun shy after the smoke from the last one - but you can smell gas in the smoke, so I do not think it is an oil problem. Valves make more noise than my other engine - might need to re adjust them again.

If you can turn it over by hand, chances are it should be simpe enough, this is my third f head - the first 2 had sat, number 3 had seized up on both. On the first one, I did a simple rering and honed the block - the engine lost oil and I scored the crank in less than 500 miles - engine #2 has had 645 worth of machine work, waiting on a master overhaul kit (bearing standared, rings n pistons 30 over = 5-600) - this engine #3 is just to tie me over till I get the machined one back together (lacking the fundage)

still though - I just though about the time it took to install with no outside help - bout 7 hrs once I got it out of the truck.

You said you could smell gas in the smoke, Just a possibility thats easy to fix, If you are running a Carter YF that has sat and all the fuel has evaporated out of the float bowl the accelerator pump diaphragm will dry up and crack, this will allow fuel to be pulled from below the throttle plates directly into the intake manifold.

Initially this will behave like a stuck/flooding float, If its bad enough it will leak into the engine when the engine is not running ( overnight ) and the engine will be difficult to start because its both flooded and an empty float bowl at the same time.

ok - swapped out the carb with mine, engine ran better, still a small amount of smoke and seamed to skip. Swapped out my dist. cap and wires, engine seamed to purr - progress.

Attempted to put her into gear and back out of the shop. Clunk bang - opps ??? that dosn't sound right! - put her into first, - clunk, stall, restart, clunk, chug cough clunk - Hello Mission control? - something is definatly not right. everything lined up, clutch looked ok, presure plate looked good, engine and trannie slid together no problem, all bolts are tight.

Combination I used was the engine I picked up from xalexj with my trans n transfercase. hmmm, I wonder???

mabe I shoulda removed the clutch n pressure plate and checked for a pilot bearing - if it is wobbling around in there it would not be good.

As one last though, how does the shifter shafts on the transfercase come off? - it would be a LOT easier to pull the engine, trannie combo together than the items separate.

not going anywhere for the moment - so, any advice is welcome.

As far as the noisey lifters, that can be something as simple as valve adjustment or replacing the intake rocker rail assembly. If you have another Fhead you can swap parts between the two engines to see if that quiets it down. This can be done in about an hour with even removing the head. Check out this to see if this is the noise at the G503 website-

Yep. Billy is right on here. If you want the engine to run correctly you'll need to tune it. This is especially critical if you've swapped or moved the distributor.

    You'll need to

    1. Set your spark plug gap to specification.
    2. Set your point cap to specification.
    3. Set your timing correctly using a timing light.

As he stated in a previous post, the F-head will run even if the settings are way out. It'll smoke, it might backfire, it might run on, it may have no power, but it will run.

Hey Billy, didn't even bother to check the timing as there was such a racket going on when I attempted to drive it this morning after swapping the carb, cap and wires, it was obviously more than timing. Pulled the engine - had thought about just dropping the trannie and working on it from underneath, glad I didn't go that route.

Found the problem with it clunking and making other obnoxious noise when I attempted to put her into gear, which probably had something to do with the total lack of power.

The clutch is messed up something - the center gear area of the clutch rattles like a 1 yr old rattle toy, add that to the miscellaneous chunks of metal that look like the remains of either a starter gear or the input shaft of a former transmission and I find myself wishing I had taken more time in the prep – my fault – again, sometimes I can be an idiot. No biggie I did check the input shaft of the transmission - it is fine, so is the starter gear, so I have no idea where these paices come from

Pulled the flywheel, there are more miscellaneous chunks of metal in behind the fly wheel, trying to remove the transmission dust cover, it is attached to the block – those bolts are out, after scraping off some more layers of grease and dirt, I found a row of screws along the bottom, and to get to them, I have to drop the oil pan.

Workin on it – hope this is all hahahahahahaha

ok folks the oil pan is back on, new clutch disk an presure plate - even swapped out the fly wheel. The fly wheel that was on was drilled for a pressure plate that only had 3 springs. The one I used has 9 springs and was the one that came with the first motor.

Motor is back in waiting to be bolted up and then we shall see

    I hope I pray

oh - and i took the time to clean her up and give her a nice quick coat of sail blue. She's purdy

motor is in hooked up and runs.

Gotta go track down a timing light so I can
engine is smokie - almost nothing at idel but it looks white when held at a higher idel - I am hoping it is just burning off what was in the exhaust system from the first failed motor.

Clunk bang boom is gone ( looks like it was the clutch)

Still not much in the way of power or acceleration - a tune up is next on the list

Dood, I hope for your sake it's not the head gasket or the dreaded block crack between #2 & #3. I had one that had the same symptoms, barely noticeable at idle but a nice fog once the RPM's came up. Had a nice crack between #2 and 3 cyl. Would idle all day though. Hope your saga ends better..........
