Hello all, My '74 CJ5 currently has the square style YJ tail lights. I've been searching for age appropriate reproduction round style tail lights. Has anyone had any success in finding those? Thanks in advance....

    Unobtainium.

You might be able to find a used pair if I don't get them first.

The actual cans are truly unobtainable. I squished one in an altercation with a sequoia tree, and had to "unsquish" the thing using a custom made mandrel and a press.

The 4wd parts lights linked above are just ordinary trailer lights, available anywhere.

The price taillight king is asking for the original correct lense is outrageous ($15), considering the same lens is available at NAPA for $6.95. (balkamp #680-2224) But you have to have the original can in order to use the replacement lens.

Most folks just give up and use the commonly available round trailer lights. I sure wouldn't pay 4wd's price though, since every autoparts store on the planet has them for less....

I'm sure the cans are still available somewhere as I replaced my lens 2 years ago with brand new ones from NAPA. The lens # is Grote 9034

While we're on this subject, does anyone know if the original cans had a clear window in the bottom for a license plate light? Both of mine are completely solid, with no clear window. I was thinking of cutting a window and gluing in a clear plastic lens.

Yes, the drivers side has a clear window in the bottom to illuminate the license plate. There's also a LP bracket that goes between the can and the body on the DS. You have two passenger side lights.

It would not be hard to make them I'd think. The originals were stamped but I guess they could be spun too. The socket is a parts store item.

Believe it or not....I found a pair with the clear bottom lens intact a couple of years ago.

Keeping as spares for the moment. I think I only paid $5.00 each for them - couldn't believe it!monkeys

Hey guys. I have what I am pretty sure are a pair of the originals that I took off of my 75 CJ-6. I haven't looked at them in a minute but I seem to recall a little surface rust but no real serious damage. My Jeep wasn't anywhere near original enough (aside from the ultra-rare taillights, apparently) to warrant a stock resto, so it's getting a pretty serious build. I wasn't really planning on selling them but if one of you guys that's doing a restoration wants them I'll get them out of the "stock parts" drawer and look them over to make sure they're in the shape I seem to remember and then post pics so we can figure out what they're worth.

Are you all referring to the HALL tailights? Kaiser Willys has repro metal ones.

No, we are not speaking of the HALL lights. They were for early jeeps, not intermediates....

Have attached a few images of the original drivers side tail-light that came on my CJ-5.

Thought the pictures may be of assistance?

Have a few sets that I purchased in 1970 to have as spares. As mentioned before, I do have the larger "original" 1972 bell shaped drvr and pass. tail lights as well .... if of interest on my spare parts shelves?

Just knew I would need replacements (all expendable parts especially) over the years and a lot of parts added to shelves in garage from 72 thru 75 for my Jeep, etc. Lights, corners and trim pieces, etc.

Kind of went crazy and my friends remarked that I had a Kaiser, Willys and AMC corner on all the original spare parts for my four Jeeps. I started collecting and ended up with 44,45',48 (these three are used and WIP as always) and my original purchase in 72' or my 1972 CJ-5.

Took delivery at factory and found that the AMC was only in the drivers side rear emblem. The variety of different OEM parts over the years that required here and there was interesting.

Due to combination of Kaiser and Willys OEM parts and pieces found thru-out this machine has proven to be really great!

Well, enough of my longwinded talk.... have to get back into my garage.

Sorry Gunner, but I don't understand what your point is. What are you trying to show us? The lights pictured are not what came on a '72 CJ from the factory.

Thanks for correcting me.... did I mention old.... sorry, meant to include the original lights on the 72'. The smaller tail lights are original for earlier flat fenders and were purchased original in 1968 as part of my odd-ball collection I had some years ago that I started actually in 1961 (young kid) as I started collecting everything my neighbor was not using on his big set of older Jeeps.

Seems to have proved a good "odd habit" as aLL THE OLDER MILITARy Jeep owners seem to come by and ask to wander into my garage storage bins and nose around. I always get the same questions.

Damn, all these M38/A1, MB/GPW, M38 and early CJ parts and pieces. I drove my parents and neighbors crazy. All my friends were collecting baseball cards and other stuff and my bedroom, garage and back yard was packed with any and all parts and pieces of Jeeps from 1940 through (as of now.... 1972.
I finally now have a few Military Jeeps. Two MB/GPW's and one M38A1. They are in a storage small area... enclosed and yep...air-cinditioned. And you can guess right.. I do have shelves around them with every part I could glean as either needed or an spare original. I can honestly state all of the parts on my Jeeps are original and actually appropriated as OEM by myself or my small "band of brothers" over the years that have adopted the three old Military Jeeps... named as follows: Patton, Teddy, Ike. All three are actually not in too bad shape and are in pretty good shape. Some rust, most has been taken care of with some grinding and welding... NO Fiberglass or Bondo, etc!. All my Jeeps are handled with care... although "Grunt" (The 72'). Anyway.... Sorry for loss of explanation and was only trying to show an image of the tail light that sounded like what yall were referring too? Yes, am long winded at tgimes...sorry... goes with ODD collection habits I guess... I won't say what the neighbors call me... will get thrown off site! LMAO

Attached are some original tail-light (yes.... original as I took delivery at dealership... Factory rep. was available due to a Top issue the "factory" was involved in some issue involving fabric and Bestop involvement as well.) Original rear tail-light(s)images also.... will be selling them soon or whenever someone needs them? Offer plus shipping and they are gone.... I do have the pair available if anyone is interested?

Yikes,!! this is an odd thread. It's really tough to follow.
I'm kinda glad I swaped in Grote Hi-Cound LEDs on my '74.
