    Re: Rear main seal removal

Main caps are all back in place now.

Just waiting on Autozone to get the oil pan and pickup gasket set delivered. Now debating whether to wait until 1:00 and pick it up and fix and then flat-tow to the Fall Reunion. Or just drive the VW, avoid the KC rush hour traffic I'd hit if I fix the Jeep and only use about $20 in gas and not >$60 in the truck...

Jeep is back together. Had to reprime the oil pump since we turned the crankshaft with it apart.

Took it for a short shakedown run. Runs good, seems quiet, no major oil leaks anywhere.

    Onward and upward.

What is involved in priming the oil pump? I've been following your thread as I've been doing the same project. Or to be more accurate, my T/C output seal project crept into a "try to dry up all the leaks" project .

Pack the oil pump with petroleum jelly. That will create the suction to prime it.

And then I cut an old screw driver apart and chucked it into my drill and spun the pump down through the distributor hole until I had pressure as I recall..

As I was reading through this thread, I kept thinking ' Oh god, no-- don't take it apart, don't take it apart' (like you do when watching a horror movie 'no, don't go down in the basement, don't go down in the basement!) I'm sooo glad you chose to leave it together!

As we all know, the oil filtering system on the old Hurricane leaves alot ot be desired. Bearing & journal scoring is a real thing and WILL happen. Mine is quite a bit worse than yours sounds, and that was the last time I took it apart, about 20K miles ago!

As the wise folks here said-- "run it!" :)

While it's on my mind-- has anyone come up with a 'full-flow' filter setup for the F-head yet???
