For those who have painted there engines with the Nason or Duplicolor paint, do you use any kind of primer or just shoot it straight to the engine?

Straight on the engine, no primer. Make sure it's fully degreased though or the paint won't stick. I use green or blue painters masking tape to tape off areas I don't want paint. Places like the exhaust gasket surfaces, carb mounting flange, etc. It's easily cut for the contours and comes off easy with minimal residue.

Grease also works for masking on machined surfaces. Can get messy if you aren't careful though.

I also prefer grease because I can leave it there for a long time if necessary and don't have to worry about the glue from tape sticking.

I have used aluminium foil to mask off things I didn't wanted painted. Just wrap the item and crunch it down to the size you need to cover the item.
