Since the Jeep is almost all on her way, I'm out enjoying her while I picked this up for the new project. I'm sure all of you know it by now. Just gathering parts for now.
It's a VW dune buggy... Uh, obviously Sammy, lol. But it's a shortened 66? bug pan and it's a Wards Bandit Body made by the Dune Buggy Company in Denver.
    How it looked

Then after getting the pan, body and swing axle, I looked at it like...dang. So I emailed the PO and asked if he had any other things he was willin to part with, sure enough, 2 sets of wheels, the front axle and everything else that came with the full buggy (sans engine, never had one) for...$75. I was stoked! I came with $125 just to be nice. Not too bad for a CL posting for WTB Glass Buggy Body....

And the cragers (I think?) seen here in the tub
    [IMG]
    Its a tight garage!

And then got these, I pulled them apart and rebuilt them. They didn't move at all when I got them, now they swing freely
    [IMG]
And then tonight I spray painted the teeth on the front (just for poops and giggles.... it'll all be sanded off later) and mocked up 1 headlight (daylighter, the other one from the Jeep...LOL)

    Bueno!
I hope yer computer isn't frozen up now R)

Waiting for Cletus to get back in town, rumor has it he has some wheels for me (he said so, lol)
    So, here's pics.
    J pipes (eliminates heater boxes)

Header, will need stripping and painting
    [IMG]
1600 single, will propel the buggy really nicely :)

    Solex
He switched the flex plate to a flywheel and gave me (gave as in...gave) a clutch for it
    [IMG]
    1500 super! ... its actually a 1600
    [IMG]
    Headlights I scored. for I believe $20
Basically a NEW empi muffler [IMG]
Looks like it was used for about 2 months. Minimal scrapes on it from it being in a lowered car. I'll probably give it to Lucas if he wants it or hang it up since I'm thinking stinger off the header or use a glass pack.

Looking at this I really want reduction boxes on the rear... hmm. Too bad they're the overdrives of the VW world.

Sammy, a word of advice from painful personal experience on putting the pedal cluster back in- make sure you understand exactly the requirements on how to adjust the clutch and brake pedal stops and how much slack there is supposed to be push rod & master cylinder piston, I spent all last summer rebuilding Putt's brakes because a bunch of different mechanics kept getting it wrong.

And then I got it wrong too.:mad:

The dual MC from a '67-'72(?) make a nice upgrade as well.

    H.

P.S. Why are reduction boxes so hard to come by? All the mini busses had'em:?

Of course, they do tend to reverse your wheel rotation a bit, can't remember now if you can set up a type 1 tranny for that by reversing the ring gear or if you'd need to go with the van tranny.

Howard, what do you mean with the clutch cable and brake stops? I'm considering a dual MC. A friend has one from a super he may sell for cheap, suppose it should just swap right in.

Reduction boxes are hard as everyone wants them and grabs them up. They're never for sale. Afaik, with adapters they would go right onto my swingaxle

VWs are no-where near as forgiving of swapping brake parts around as jeeps are. :(

There's a screw-stop that limits how far forward the pedals can come, it's set by measuring the distance from the front bulkhead to the top back of the brake pedal IIRC. At this setting there is also a quite definite amount of free play that is supposed to be in the brake pedal before it's push rod hits the MC piston. There ain't not a lot of leeway in these adjustments, due to the small volume of the master cylinder- er, um, "cylinder" and likewise small volume of the wheel cylinders a minute variation from the factory settings can really louse up your braking- a hair too tight & your brakes will, eventually, in the middle of nowhere, with absolutely no input from you- at all, lock up. A hair too loose & you can't lock them up when you them too. This has been exasperated by the factory manual which says if you get the pedal stop right the brake push rod does not need to be adjusted (actually it says "under absolutely no circumstances adjust push rod"). That was fine when the parts were all coming from Germany & made with German precision, these days with the Mexican/Brazilian/Taiwanese/???, yes the push rod needs to be set.

I don't think the super beetle MC is a workable solution for you, the front wheel cylinders are apparently a different volume than the older setup, the MC is certainly a different part number. Also, just forget about it if it came off a car with disks.

As for the reduction boxes, yeah they will probably bolt on but the way I've heard it bus trannies used with the reduction boxes have the ring gear carrier reversed left-right compared with bug trannies because the reduction boxes are simple two spur gear design (like the PTO reduction drives for jeeps), that means the axle turns the input to the box one way, the output of the box drives the wheels the other way.

Seems to me just by bolting a couple of these things to your axles you'll end up with one very good forward crawl ratio and some very interesting experiences backing up.

I did find some boxes available on TheSamba- Caveat Emptor :D

Now, if it were me & I wanted the extra clearance (amongst other things) I'd be figuring out some way to fit a couple of D18 transfer cases off the ends of the axles

One way or the other you're gonna have a really fun vehicle there when you're done :)

Howard, I'll definitely keep an eye out about the brakes. That's one area I don't mess around with. The adjusting doesn't sound too friendly either. John Muir's Idiot book has good tips in that area too. It's going to be harder for me since the pan was shortened ~14" as well.

I'd like the additional lift and just to put the bus gearbox in but it's just hard to do for me. I know one guy who had one but he sold it like the day he mentioned he was considering pulling it. I want it on the road! Lol. The biggest tire it will see is maybe 31's too (bigger than my Jeep!)

I'm also on the Samba as well

Naw, I had a chance to buy a split window today for a grand. I was like uhhh! If I had the money dude!

But, 2 swingaxles both with redux boxes for $60. I'm glad.

I'm considering selling it. My heart is slowly creeping away from it. I love it, I thought it would be a fun run fast car just to go shred the dunes with but it's messing me up. My dad hates it and everything about it too, thinks i should have built a rail blah blab blah.
