Hey all it's been awhile since I've posted. Got the bug again. I have been looking to do some kind of swap to improve my crawl ratio. 304 d20 3.73 35 inch tires. I do have an adapter from a 727 to the d20 could I use the adapter on any other trany? Just checking would be nice to save a buck or 500.

biggest issue with an auto trans swap is length. Most autos are too long to be easily adapted especially if your jeep is lifted.

Also, depending on the adapter you have for the D20 you may need to find a 10 spline input gear from an auto. All the d20's behind the 3 speeds had a 6 spline gear.

The 727 is also a problem because the pan sticks out on the driver's side. It can be done, with a 2-piece front driveshaft; the driveshaft will need a carrier bearing for the middle. Jim (jpflat2a) has posted pictures of a 727 in a CJ before. The AMC cased 727 should be pretty easy to come by, since they were used in Grand Wagoneers for so many years. Supposedly some of them had locking convertors too, which would boost the conversion efficiency some. The 727 would not help your crawl ratio, with a 2.45 1st gear.

Do you definitely want an automatic?

No on the auto I was just checking to see if that adapter would adapt the d20 to any other trany. I had the a 340 with the 727 in there when I got it but the guy didn't have the front drive shaft hooked up because it hit the trans pan.I put the amc stuff in there cause thats what I had.

Oops ... meant the 727 pan sticks out on the passenger side. But you knew that.

To answer the question about the adapter, it will fit only the 727, no manuals and no other auto's that I'm aware of.

I can get a T176 with a d300. That would put my crawl ratio at about 34
Teralow 3.15 would be about 35 with my current combo. How is the T176 campared to the T15? Would it be an upgrade.
