Hi, I think my alternator has given up the ghost having done some checks on it with a voltmeter. Nearly all commercial sites offer alternators for 1975 CJ5 onwards.

Is there any difference between a alternator for 72, 74, 76, 78 and so on?

    Engine is a AMC I6 232.

    Thanks, Jas

I believe that that is the cutoff for the old Motorola externally regulated alternator mounted low on the drivers side.
Those alternators were weak and expensive.
The later years used the cheap and reliable Delco-Remy internally regulated alternator mounted higher up un the passenger side.
I am in the middle of converting mine to the Delco and I was told that I needed to change the timing cover (to mount the bracket to),change out the water pump and pulley (to line up the belt and clear the heater hose over the alt) and find the bracket for the alternator.

Can you shoot us a pic of what you have? You may already have an up-grade on it.

    Good thinking.
That would make life easier if it was already converted, wouldn't it?

Uanble to upload an image for some reason. Did try and click insert image but prompted me for a http://.

The alternator is low down on the block with a banana shaped upper bracket. The alternator itself seems to have wires upto a three pin box which I assume is an external voltage regulator.

If the only main difference is mounting then I can fabricate something.

You need to host the image elsewhere...such as Photobucket...and post the link here.

With a little trimming of the bracket and turning down of the fan blades you can mount a delco alternator in the Motorola bracket. Worked Fine for me for a few years.

There is a glimpse of it in this photo
