Just recently adapted the tranny to the 231 that I just swapped out. I had only been driving for about 150 miles and started getting sounds like the throw out bearing was already starting to go and the gears were grinding going into 2nd and 3rd. The other night was going for ice cean with the family and when I let the clutch out in 1st and 2nd i got a terrible grinding sound, but not in 3rd. I parked the old jeep and pulled the tranny to get a look. The throwout was wobbly and the gears looke chewed up. Did I mess up when I changed out the parts or is it some thing else. I have pictures to post.

Looks like a piece of foreign material rattled around inside there and got caught between the gears.

Pilot bushing is good and dug around in the case and the only material is the fine shavings from gears.

This is a stupid suggestion but here goes. Did you replace any gears? I know there are 16 and 18 tooth input shafts and 33 and 35 tooth cluster gears. Is it possible to mix them?
    16 goes with 35 and 18 goes with 33.

Looking at the pictures, it looks like the gears are ground up on the outer diameter of the teeth but no on the face of the teeth where they would contact if meshing correctly. It almost seems that the input shaft gear and the cluster gear are not meshing properly or at the proper depth. That is the reason for my suggestion that there may be a mismatch in gear tooth count (diameters) but it is difficult to analyze, not being there so one can only guess. On the other hand, such a mismatch would probably be noticed upon assembly. First and second were grinding because they receive input shaft torque via the cluster gear. In third gear, the synchro sleeve locks directly to the input shaft so no grinding.

Looking at your original post again, for some reason I thought the tranny was a recent rebuild but I see you say that you only put 150 miles on it since sticking a 231 in front of it. I wonder if the input bearing or cluster bearings are bad allowing the gears to run out of proper mesh.
