Hi, anyone know what thread is tapped into the front and rear axles (1974 CJ5) for the breather unions. My old 90 degree unions are cracked and the local pipe shops cannot work out what thread it uses? :?

Pretty sure the breather in that era is pressed in. There's no thread AFAIK.

The breather on the Dana 30 pumpkin? Not sure of the thread...but it is definitely threaded.

The Dana 44 is on the tube, right side, near where the brake line comes down off the frame and attached to the tube. Not sure if that was threaded, I tapped mine to fit a new elbow.

I tapped my rear 44 with an 1/8" NPT tap and it worked out pretty well. I've got an 1/8" NPT fitting threaded into my front axle also. I can't remember if I tapped it or if the threads were already there though.

I've found some earlier 30's had a tapped hole, 1/8" npt as mentioned, and some later ones had a pressed in breather that had "ridges" on it to help hold it in place. Remove it or bang it around and they round off and don't hold well. I typically re-tap them to 1/8" npt and install a fitting and run the breather hose up high...
