Hi, Just took my exhaust and inlet manifolds off to replace the exhaust manifold and noted dribble of oil from each inlet port in head.

Is this normal ? Can only imagine valve stem oil seals have rotted, or as part of crankase PCV system oily fumes form film / liquid in inlets?

Secondly on an unrelated matter I noticed when I turn my steering wheel the shaft turns straight away (a good thing) but there is delay before pulman arm moves - hense sloppy / dangerous wandering. Is there anyway of tightening up the steering box?

    Thanks, Jas

There shouldn't be any oil in the intake ports.

You are most likely correct to assume that the valve seals are leaking.
Did it give a little puff of smoke when you started the engine in the morning?
That would be that oil being drawn in and burned.

Its not catastrophic but just points to the fact that the motor is getting tired.

They can be replaced with the head on with a little gizmo that allows you to put compressed air in the plug hole to keep the valves closed and a lever tool to compress the valve spring, remove the keepers, remove the spring, and R&R the seal.

Have you downloaded the PDF format 74 FSM yet?
It will tell you how to check for worn valve guides while you are at it.

Decades!:( ago and ol' timer taught me a trick I've used more than one time.
Instead of bringing the piston-ie to top dead ccenter, (T.D.C.) and usiong air to hold it up,
He'd bring it up 1/2 er so, slip in a pile of clothes line, (leaving some out the piston hole, or you know what will happen:rofl:!)
Turn the engione till it got a bit hard, (compressing the rope).
This'd hold the valve up tight.
He'd take a deep socket as big as the outter edges of the valve spring and WHACK! the spring.
9 outta 10 times the keepers would pop off in the socket!
He'd inspect the valve stem tops, (sometimes if the lifter is spongey it'll "flatten the top, if so, he GENTLY file or sand the burr), wiggle the valve to see how bad the guide was, grease the valve stem, use the "Mousey Rubber":?R) over the stem and install the best seals he could find, (never used the square "O" seals Chevy used, always the full seals). Seat them with the tool provided.
He had a crank down compressor that was old as he was, compress the springs with it, inspect and replace the keepers.
Turn the motor, rap the valve to "seat" the keepers, pull the rope out and go to the next cylinder.
I've done the same a few times and always thought of Frank Shaffer as I was doing it.
Smoking Kent cigerettes and huffing Prinatine mist cuz he was hacking up a lung!
I've pass it on to my sons.(except for ther smoking)!:)
