    Back at it!
I finally got the rest of the parts to get the D30 back together.
Got the Hubs Pressed on the discs:

Took apart and cleaned up the locking hubs:

Re-packed the old bearings, but put in the new races for the inner bearing to space the hub out 1/8".

    New inner seals:

Then I got the whole thing bolted up. One thing to note was that I could not fit the retaining clip on the splines at the end of the axle. It was close but it just didn't quite make it. Looking at how the whole axle is held together I (along with '74Renegade and Posimoto) decided the clips are not needed, and I left them out. I went with RTV for the locking hub gaskets so we will see how that holds up. Got the whole assembly back together and mounted up. Looking clean:

Here is a shot of the Confer Shackles next to the shackles that I had on there prior (Thanks '72cj5!!)

And finally after messing around with this thing for weeks, the D30 went back under the Jeep. Here I left one wheel off while I checked the turning clearances with the new disc brake calipers....

Once I had the front back in I pulled it out in the the street one more time, flipped it around again, and pulled out the rear to see what kind of shape it was in:

Congratulations! Front axle looks great. You are going to love the discs up front. Do you have plans for the rear axle?

Thanks! No plans really, It will get the POR-15 treatment and a look inside to see if any teeth are missing/broken. Other than that I hope not to have to tear into it. Although the drums are grooved just as bad as the fronts were so they need to be replaced... I don't know if I want to swap over the rear to disc, I'd rather just get it back under the jeep and get this thing drivable.

Boy, I hear that. I took my Jeep apart 15 months ago. Missed 2 Summers of wheeling.......waa waa waa! Got a couple of months more to go I figure. As far as discs on the rear. I have them and I don't see that they are much better than drums on the rear. The real stopping power is in the front anyway. And when they are wet the discs stop you straight.

Well from the looks of things, you'll be taking home the checkered flag on this one. I still got to:
Dial in my (not so much there) welding ability
    mount front hangers and axle
    p/s convertion
    shorten drag link
    get drivelines made up
    run brake lines and e-brake
motor mounts, seat belts misc litle stuff
paint it and then go wheelin!
And by the way, that front axle looks really really good. When you get her all done, wait for me and we can take them together to see how they do. You'll have to pm me your number again since I broke my last phone and dont have it anymore.

Opened up the rear, this fluid looked a little more dirty, more what I was expecting to see in the front.

Good news was no chips or missing teeth. Everything looked sweet so I gave the the wash, wire wheel, prep, POR-15 treatment.

Drug it back under the jeep, and buttoned it all up:

I don't know if I am a fan of the Chrome diff cover or not, but my neighbor gave it to me and it was actually thicker than the stock one so I just slapped it on there. It's a little to *bling for my taste but I guess a little of that is ok right?

Any suggestions on what differential fluid I should throw in these things. I am under the impression that any 80W90 should do the trick but I thought I would throw it out there first to make sure.

Next I am going to get to work on the seat mounts.

Looks like its an open diff. so 85-90w is fine. I kinda like the chrome cover. As long as you don't show up with the matching chrome hood hinges, winshield hinges, grill cover, gas cap, mirrors............................. ;)

@IMOWOOD Thanks, actually now that I look at it more, I think I might be ok with a little chrome.

@'72CJ5 I am still trying to figure out what to do for the cross section piece on the frame. I have a piece of 1"x2.5"x .120 I was thinking about welding in there. As for the rest of the bumper the welder I was using took a trip to Oregon for 8 weeks so now I have to track down another so I can continue. That should happen soon because I need to weld up the seat mounts this weekend.

I think my goal is going to be to have this thing on the road by Nov. 10th. I am taking a trip to the beach for 4 days and would love to roll in this. But that means getting it finished, ok'd by the DMV, road tested, bugs worked out blah blah blah...

We shall see. Keep in mind I really am a rookie so I dont know exactly what will pop up!

If the welder is going to be gone for that long, the why dont you just get you one? Being a CJ owner now, its probably a good thing to have in the ol garage.
