Here is a little 'photo-orgy' of my cj5. These were taken about 5 years ago, but It has been garage kept and unmolested for all this time. We have a 3 month old son. Our first. I want to be able to travel and camp and such with him in his Great-great Grandfather's truck. So he is the inspiration for the build. My list of plans it way over detailed so I'll lay out ideas as I move along. Enjoy![IMG][IMG]

What is the black thing that looks like a pump that is mounted on the driver fender inside of the engine compartment? Is it part of the heater?

    Just curious
    :?

    I Like It.

    I Like It A Lot.

I suspect I would have liked Great Great Grandad as well. :)

Yeah, he was a jeep guy of the earliest ilk. The whole truck is essentially covered in neat, subtle, and practical custom touches. I never got to spend any time with him in the Jeep. We would just hang out and watch tv in his later years. However, if it ever snowed, our family scrabbled to see who could secure the Jeep first for getting around town. No one has driven the thing for over twenty years. But my old man swears that it is the best beer drinkin, pull the boat out to the river truck ever!
I'm not sure what that canister is either, but I'll check it out and get back to ya.

That is the smallest set of Gates tires I've ever seen. I think they are Gates...look like the same tread. My Dad sold tires for Gates way back when. We got to visit the factory and watch them make tires. We got the best rubber bouncy balls ever made after the tour!

1956? Has the standard 1956 speedometer (only goes to 8 ) with the broken needle! I've seen more broken ones than intact ones. I have three, two w/broken needles and one intact. Must have been a common enough problem to force a design change for '57. Looks like a great project!

Looks like a good project! Everything is there it looks like from the pics.

Every jeep should have had them from the factory. Most were probably removed for some reason or another.

I've never seen those before, and I've seen my share of early CJ's. There's no reason for them, unless you bolt something to the hood that needs a ground.

Love your JEEP great way to spend the day fixing it up. It will be the best JEEP around when you finish. Ah, you almost never finish but it's great fun. The canister you are looking at looks to me like a heater of some sort. Let us know what you find out?

Looks like Great Grandad had a CB or ham radio in there at some point, I can see the antenna wire hanging down under the dash. Adding the ground straps to the hood may have been a fix for a receiver noise problem.

AFAIK (I'm no expert), that's a 1956 only speedo. My '56 has the same one, the needles seem to have been very fragile. I've only seen a couple that didn't have the long part of the needle broken off. 1957-later speedos go to "9", and have a different face.

    This is a 1955.

I scored this '56 on eBay. Have two(or three ?) others with broken needles.

Here's one with what looks like a clock needle on it.

    1957-later (AFAIK).....
