I just pulled my t case for my engine swap. I removed the shifters and before I replace them I want to address the (side play)?. The shifters will wiggle back an forth enough to disengage the shift rails. is this wiggle supposed to be controlled by the anti rattle clips (mine had non) or is the shaft clearance be tight enough to prevent wiggle. This must be a common problem I remember my 66 cj doing the same thing in 1970.

Yes, that's the function of the anti rattle springs/clips. Also check the pivot pin as they get worn allowing the shifters to move side to side like that.

right or wrong, I used a thin washer to the side of the shift levers to tighten mine up Brian

PB Blaster and a ViseGrip and hammer is what I use if they are rusted in. Usually need to twist a bit to loosen up the rust. Then replace with a new one as they are usually messed up very well
