I'm working on my 1973 cj5 and need a good brand of body filler/bondo for a few places. So what is the best - I'm no pro at this and after my first couple attempts I can see this is harder than it looks. What kind of filler works best?

Whatever you use, be sure to let it sit for about a month to let the solvents work out of the filler after it sets up. I failed to do this and it caused my paint to blister. The side that sat for a few months had no problems. Just a heads up.

wow....I've never had that problem and have worked on and painted several vehicles including my cj6
wonder if you had another issue that contributed to the problem?

You should be able to prime/block-sand/paint right away. Typically you'd use a sealer over the top of your body work. A typical process might be filler on bare metal or over epoxy primer (either is fine depending on the product - check the directions), then a high-build primer and block sand, sealer, and top coat. A typical sealer might be the same epoxy primer you put over the bare steel, or some urethane primers can be used for a sealer. Pretty sure you aren't allowed to shoot top coat over bare filler.

The name I recall is Rage for filler. Here's a good thread in the best forum for paint and body topics that I know of: http://www.autobody101.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1150&start=0

I used Rage also...my first time this past fall, I like how it worked. No paint yet though, too cold.

rage gold is one of the best. it doent shrink, sands easy, and has almost no pin holes when dry. i used the bondo brand when i shaved the tailgate on my tacoma and it shrank after 3 or 4 months and looks wavy if you look at it at the right angle. plus i had to use glasing putty to fill all of the pin holes. i wouldnt leave any body filler unpainted for more than a day or two. they absorb moisture from the air.
