How is this frame supposed to look?

I finally got my '59 down to bare frame. I removed the bent and tired front bumper by torching off the rivets. The front part of my frame looks warped and has several holes in it.

What is this supposed to look like? Do these holes belong there or should I fill them in?

Thanks for the picture. Just as I thought, the two larger holes don't belong there so I will try to fill them in. I also have some straightening to do.

 

Those holes look like they were put in at a body shop, so they could connect chain on frame machine to straighten frame after it was wrecked.

 

I was thinking holes for an electric winch mount.

 

It had a snowplow on the front at one time. There was some heavy duty custom made mounting system attached to the underside of the frame near the motor mounts. It is possible those holes had something to do with the plow.

I don't see any signs that the Jeep was ever wrecked, the rest of the frame is flawless.

 

My '56 doesn't have them.

 

Oh, I HIGHLY recommend the new front bumpers from Walck's!!! Outstanding quality!!! I couldn't believe how nice mine was, it turned out great after powdercoating. I used spline necked carriage bolts from McMaster-Carr to bolt the bumper on. http://www.mcmaster.com/#carriage-bolts/=b1pwxf

Here's what the front of a '70 model looks like. Looks exactly the same.(two holes on the side and one on top toward the front) I should have used some kind of carriage bolts on mine. Oh well, its all powder coated now

How are you guys getting those frames so damn smooth looking? I know a lot of it is prep, but are you using an undercoating, spray cans, paint guns, etc? That one of Rondog's looks awesome!

I'm too dang old to do it the hard way, I just had it sandblasted and powdercoated. It's beautiful! And my frame was in excellent condition to begin with, the Jeep sat indoors for 30 years. Need to get back to work on it, axles and springs are ready to hang.

 

I pick up mine from the sandblaster tonight, I'm very excited. I'll post a pic.

 

Hay, these pics are great. Anybody have rear views? I just got my rear cross member and had to do some serious grinding to get the old off. Nedd a good placement pic. Also, advise on weld or bolt on the new?

Not quite sure what ya wanna see, but here's a few...

 

I just picked up my frame from the sandblaster. I was somewhat disappointed, I was hoping it would come out all shiny and new but there are parts that are still pitted (mostly the rear A frame cross member.)

I'll take the grinder to it in hopes of smoothing it out some more. What about a thin coat of Bondo to smooth it out? Bad idea?

I wouldnt worry too much about the pitting...IMHO bondo would probably crack out later from the frame flexing.

IMHO once you get it sand blasted its tough to get it smooth looking after

Yeah good point on the flexing, I hadn't thought of that. I was just hoping to get it looking as good as some of the ones I've seen on here, I'm jealous.

 

paint it all and itll look fine....

 

Hit it with a D/A sander and 180 grit. Still plenty of tooth for the paint to grab onto, and it'll look 100% better. Paint it as it is and it'll look just like that, a sandblasted frame with a rough looking paint job. Unless you're going to gob on something with a brush, then have at it. High build primer will help fill in some of the deeper pits. Use good paint, nothing that comes in a rattle can. Oh, Ron, there's water spots on your frame. A little Pledge outta help with that..............
